Re: High e-string keeps snapping, help?

The strings seem to break right at the tuning post. I typically have D'Addario EJ74 medium strings on. My method of stringing is the simple "straight down" method, for lack of a better term. My...

    High e-string keeps snapping, help?

I keep snapping high e-strings on my Eastman mandolins. Usually they will be fine for a few days or weeks, but then I'll be tuning and one will snap.

This has happened multiple times on two...

  4. Mandolin playing mindset vs guitar playing mindset

Many people play guitar first and then start playing mandolin. This tends to lead to approaching the mandolin with a guitar-playing mindset and subconscious guitar expectations. For example:

    Re: Eastman 314 vs 514

Finish and tuners are basically the difference as I understand it. Sound, playability, and workmanship are consistent across all models according to most people.

    The most obvious difference is...

Re: New Mando Day, Eastman MD315

The necks seem similar in thickness but the Kentucky has a noticeable V-shape whereas the Eastman is more round. Also the Eastman has thinner frets. I believe the 500 line has thicker fret wire...

    New Mando Day, Eastman MD315

    196459

Bought this on an impulse without trying it, and I'm really liking it. Here it is alongside my Kentucky 272.

    196460

I'm afraid the 272 is not going to get much playing time now...

Re: Buying without being able to play

Buying online without trying is always a bit of a gamble. There's no getting around that. Sometimes it works out great and results in keeper instruments, sometimes not so much. Even if the maker is...

Re: Do You Baby Your Mandolin?

I rarely keep any instruments in their cases. I like to have them out and easy to grab. But then I've never spent over a grand on any instrument. If I ever got something worth over 1500 or so I'd...

I love new strings but I'm too lazy to change them most of the time.
  12. Re: Huzzah! New Mando Day! Kentucky KM-272 from The Mandolin Stor

Yes indeed it is a V-neck.
  13. Re: Huzzah! New Mando Day! Kentucky KM-272 from The Mandolin Stor

It's tonal quality is nice, but now that the honeymoon period has ended I've noticed some issues with it.

    1) The tailpiece cover doesn't fit. It apparently wasn't shaped properly. It doesn't fall...
  14. Eastman oval-hole vs f-hole: Difference in access to upper frets?

I was looking at pictures of an MD304 and it seems like it has more restricted upper fret access compared to the MD305. Comparison photos (from Gryphon):

With the oval hole 304 it...
  15. Re: the Lloyd Loar F5s: in the 1920s and today

One of the cool things about the mandolin is definitely the "lore of Loar". It's great to see instruments with a lot of history out there in capable hands.

    Hot weather shipping concerns?

Should we be concerned when an instrument has to make a cross-country trip in the summer, when temperatures can be in the 90's or more with high humidity (or large humidity fluctuations)? Is any...

Re: Compare these 2 mandolin sound samples

A sounded a little brighter. Could just be the string age difference. Other than that they sounded very similar to me. Were they different models?

    Re: D string intonation

My best guess would be that the nut is filed unevenly so that one of your D-strings is sitting slightly higher off the fretboard than the other. If this is the case, then they will sound fine when...

  25. Re: What price level and up gets you a "lifelong keeper" mandolin

Hi Barry, I like bluegrass, blues, and jazz on mandolin. I'm open to used instruments and my ideal mandolin is an f-style with f-holes. I just love the look of the scroll.
