Thanks for the info Tom. I didn't know 14.25" is often used for 10-strings these days. I have to say it seems right to me although I've only made two of them so far. Both are archtop mandolins....

Thank you Ron.
14.25" scale length. Lower course worked out beautifully using .053"s.

Gordon Stevens plays "If I Only Had a Brain" on his Wilkie 10-string mandolin.
I am building another one right now so who knows? I'll try to make it happen. Yes it's a magnetic pickup made by Kent Armstrong. Sounds great!
I had an order for one last year but my customer changed his mind. I did manage to get the fretboard slotted so if I ever get the opportunity again I'll be ready. It was a 16"/14" scale. I imagine...
Thank you John! It was fun to make and challenging. That's what I like about a project like this, I can do what I want and don't have anyone to answer to! This is only the second 10-string I have...
Thanks Andrew. I love Kent's pickups. I especially love how he is willing to do custom stuff. This is the second 10-string pu he has made for me and it is the way to go on an instrument like this...
Yes the bridge is also walnut. Back, sides, neck and binding.
I just finished this 10-string mandolin for an exhibit at the Robert Bateman Centre in Victoria, BC, Canada. The idea was a group of artists of varying backgrounds all make objects using wood from...
thanks Clinton, yeah that 18mm plane is my favorite. I made inserts for my archtop carving cradle so I can use it for mandolins and mandolas. Makes carving a lot quicker and easier.
Thanks Bill, I appreciate it.
Thanks Bill. We've been using old 78's from my collection for the soundtrack. It's been a fun project. We're probably about 3/4 of the way through right now.
A little video my friend Kevin Moldenhaur put together. We're filming the entire process for the Robert Bateman Centre in Victoria, BC, Canada which hosts the One Tree Project later this year.

Yes the soundholes are carved and it's purely stylistic. I didn't reinforce them underneath, didn't think it was necessary and (good eye!) they are flared out thicker. I just thought it would look...
Thanks, Bill. Not adjustable, I like to keep things simple!
Here's a mandolin I'm building which is part of the "One Tree" project put on by the Robert Bateman Gallery in Victoria, BC. They've invited 40 artists from around Vancouver Island to create pieces...
Hi Caleb, thanks for posting the video! I've been back to work for a few months now and am recovery nicely. I've had so much support during these hard times that it's been difficult keeping up with...
Been looking forward to using this piece of Claro Walnut. It's going to be a mandola.
Thanks very much everyone!
Jim- here's a photo of the old with the new. I've been wanting to make the change for a couple years but it was easy to keep putting it off. Funny how a little change...
I recently re-designed my Northern Flyer mandolin (a bit) and the first one just rolled off the line for a customer in Oregon. Not much different but it's an excuse to post.
Those are beauties!
I got to hear him a few nights ago in the Old Church in Portland and he was great. A very nice guy. He has the mandola now but I don't know how much he'll be playing it at shows. I hope you get to...
