    Re: Tailpiece donner dml 100b

One of the great mistakes that parents make when they have a child that wants to learn an instrument is to go out and buy the cheapest instrument available in case the child doesn't take to the...

    Re: Antiqued/distressed instruments?

I've been working on creating a distressed Gibson F5G since about 2005. I've got some of it done mostly in spots where I rest my fingers and thumb.

    Re: Tailpiece donner dml 100b

I'm happy it's now playable. Mr. Garber, a dear friend of mine and long time Cafe member has provided sage advice when buying an instrument. It's not how much you spend on an instrument it's whether...

    Re: Antiqued/distressed instruments?

The reality is that nobody should care what you do and don't prefer in what an instrument looks, plays, or sounds like. This is a free country. Just don't even attempt to use a capo on a mandolin at...

    Re: Antiqued/distressed instruments?

People pay money for distressed jeans, leather jackets and other clothing items. It's not unique to our world but people like the look of the instruments their heroes are playing and many times those...

Re: Ferrules for a Kalamazoo KM-11

I'd just use the Stewmac's. By the way, that was a common hardware store part that you might be able to duplicate at an old hardware store. The keyword is old. It's part of a grommet. I'm sure Gibson...

Re: Loar Case Handle Restoration Inquiry

The handles were used on things other than mandolin cases as well. Luggage and cases for horns come to mind. Nick is pointing you in the right direction.
  11. Re: Gear Tuner replacement for Morgan Monroe MMS-3

Can you post an image of the back of their headstock? They also need to measure the distance between the posts on one set, center to center. Hopefully the post spacing would be the standard .906...
  12. Re: Looking for information on older F5 style mandolin

Pictures of the body front and back would be helpful. My first impression would be a one off or a kit but there are folks here that have known the builder.
  13. Re: 1935/36 Wards Fall/Winter Catalog Gibson made mandolins

There are two Kay built mandolins on the first page shown. I remember when the first Gibson made/rebranded Wards Kalamazoo mandolin hit the cafe years ago. A famous vintage instrument dealer said a...

Are you talking about 1 inch spacing post center to post center?

  21. Re: Who makes a good inexpensive Octave Mandolin?

If I hadn't just dumped money into redoing my shop I'd probably go for one of those. You actually got the shape right as far as I'm concerned and I'm assuming the sound and playablity are there. That...

Re: Is this a serious concern?

Part of the repair cost is going to be trying to undo the last attempt at repairing it. It looks like they dripped glue into the gap on one side.
