    Re: Tuner Recommendations

Peterson are fantastic when it comes to tuners. Highly recommended. The stroboclip does not show the octave however.

Not sure how one would use a tuna' fork to tune a mandolin, but I hear banjo...

    Re: Bevel on a mandolin

I've done bevels on guitars - here's a recent pic from my workbench (since we're doing a show & tell )

For an arch top mando there's a couple problems that I can think of.
    - The soundboard...

    Re: CITES Question

The main show stopper that I found trying to ship a guitar to the US about a month ago was that no carrier would insure it unless you are paying well in excess of £1k for shipping.
    I believe a few...

    Re: A guitar bodied mandocello

Thank you - sounds like 650-685 is the range then. Need to measure the blanks are long enough before committing to 685 though.

Is there a practical benefit in using individual guitar tuning...

    Re: A guitar bodied mandocello

On a serious note, would you say there's a big difference between 685 and 660 scale length for a mandocello, and would 660 work reasonably well?
Did you keep the nut & 14th fret width and bridge...

    Re: Tight Waverly's

Finish line teflon bike chain lube does wonders on the gears.

Ironically, I found it pretty useless for lubing bike chains.

What's the benefit of putting the ball ends into the tuning machines?

    Just kidding.

Re: Only change ONE string at a time!!

It's a good idea to clean your fretboard every time you grease your truss rod bearings.

Re: Octave mando 4 or 5 courses?

You can't really see it in the videos, but I hear he's got 10 fingers on each hand.

Re: Octave mando 4 or 5 courses?

I'd want to play everything on them, but in reality it will probably end up in more capable hands of a local player who'll think that it suits his style.
I am aware that some of the mando technique...

Re: Octave mando 4 or 5 courses?

Thank you very much - quite a selection of instruments you have!
5 in fifths would be preferable, but I'm a guitar luthier, so don't want to overcomplicate the first half a dozen cittern builds...

Re: Octave mando 4 or 5 courses?

Don't all rush to reply at once by the way

Having just re-strung my mando, the only downside of a 5-course that I can see is that there's an extra course to string up and keep in...

Octave mando 4 or 5 courses?

    Howdy folks.

I am starting to build a couple octave mandos and can't decide whether to go for 1 4-course and 1 5-course, or just make two 5-course ones. Both will be about 56cm scale length, so...

    New builder questions

    Howdy folks,

Hoping for some advice on building A-style mandos.

I usually build flat-top guitars, but I have recently strung up my first Loar-style "A" mando in the white and I am very pleased...
