Re: Is this a serious concern?

If your resonator mandolin was fashioned after the National model, it should look something like this when taken apart.

Re: Rubner tuners on Eastman MD305?

I agree Mike, just save the original gears and switch them out if you end up selling the Eastman. You can re-use the Rubners' on another mandolin.

    Re: Pawn Shop F5L

Wow! Someone really wanted it. Hopefully for the seller, it's a real bid. I lucked out when I bought my 81 F5L on Ebay, I wrote the seller and made an offer even though it wasn't listed as "best...

    Re: My New Baby

That little brace is normal, doesn't seem like much, does it? As long as it is secure, you should be good. I've had to reglue these on a number of teen's models.
    I'd experiment with strings and...

    Re: Pawn Shop F5L

It will be fun to see what this one goes for. If the neck had work, you'd think it could have been touched up a little better but not too late. Looks like a '01.

    Re: Hide glue question

I don't think I'll ever need to buy hide glue again, I'm still going through my initial bag plus a friend gave me a bag!

    Re: Anyone recognize this case?

It looks a bit like these two to me. I own the 2nd one pictured. I removed the guts of mine when I got it as it was set up for violin & mandolin. I made the foam form and upholstered it. I still use...
  14. Re: Why did Gibson return to Paddleheads after Snakeheads?

Funny period of history at Gibson, the Kalamazoo factory made wooden toys during the WWII years and this model was an effort to satisfy the toy and the mandolin market. It never took off and is very...

    Re: Fern?

Here are my 2 Ferns although technically the one on the left is an F5-L ('81) and the one on the right is a Fern ('06). According to Joe Vest, formerly of Gibson, " In 2003 the designation of F5L was...

Re: James Tailpiece on Eastman MD 515?

Sometimes you get lucky and the replacement tailpiece may even cover the old holes. You could choose to plug them or not. Care should be taken in drilling your new holes but doable if you're handy. I...
  18. Re: The String Instrument Craftsman magazine (no mando content)

I remember acquiring a binder with a bunch of these issues (perhaps all?) from a coworker whose late relative had owned them. I bought a box of luthier supplies, tools, parts and an instrument or two...

    Re: This Gibson

Those both look to be case queens, so much nicer shape than my '81. I don't know what an average value would be on an '81 or other close years?

I love the F-4 design over the F-5 with my favorite being the early F-4 3-point.

    Re: Ads without a price

When I sell, I always put the price. The challenge is coming up with a price that is not too high to deter interest but high enough to allow room for haglers (aren't all the buyers haglers, lol!?).
