Well, I'll complete the set -- I really REALLY like my L&H Model C, especially with the TI mittels Louise recommended.

But I admit, I do ogle the B's and A's.
  2. Re: Is there an easy way to convert TAB to notation?

Actually, Tabledit can import an ASCII tab file like the one linked in Matt's post. It is pretty persnickety and awfully frustrating if you don't do it often enough to know all the tricks and traps....

Are there any instruments out there nowadays that use a curved trussrod like that?
  6. Re: Cheap beater mandolins that play, for leaving in the car etc?

A few years ago I bought a used "Shiro" mandolin for ~$200 for my wife to try to learn to play. Shiro was a line of instruments from the early days (1960's, 1970's?) of Japanese production. The guy...

Re: Tuning up a Traditional Brekke Bridge

TLDR: I did it and it plays a lot easier for me!

    What I did:
    1. Bought a 4-40 die for $5. Cut threads as far up the post as I could go. Helped a little but I didn't think it was enough....

Re: Family photo, NMC, looking for ID

The original photo that I scanned is not much better resolution than what I posted. But it looks to me like the "peghead inlay" pattern we see is really the tag ends of several strings wrapped into...

Family photo, NMC, looking for ID

Attached is a posed formal photo of my wife's great-great-great-uncle and his son. Judging from the apparant ages of father and son we guess that it is from the early to mid 1890's. We have no idea...

Tuning up a Traditional Brekke Bridge

I recently acquired a mandolin with a traditional-style Brekke bridge. I went to adjust it to lower the action a bit (using the mini wrench that came with it) and could not get the saddle to go any...

I have heard folks praise TI strings for the whole time I have hung around the Mandolin Cafe. But their price is a barrier. A free set under the tree might well be a fun experiment. It will either...
