    Re: Warm up song

In addition, I have recently added a Wohlfahrt study, #3. I don't yet have it memorized, so I usually use this when warming up for a practice at home.

    Re: Warm up song

I have used this little ditty for a million years. I like to play it as written, and then to play it as a hornpipe, and try other rhythmic abuse.

    Re: Fender medium-gauge guitar pick

I use a 1.4mm pick for fiddle tunes and old time and bluegrass type playing, to get that warm tone. I use a 0.75mm or 0.73mm pick for classical to get those scintillating highs and sparkle.

    Within...

Re: Who makes a good Fiddle/Mandolin case?

Now would be a great time for someone to make a double case out of carbon fiber. That is the way to take care of a weight issue. :)

Re: Wegen vs. Primetone vs. Clown Barf

It strikes me that there is no need to pick one. I rotate between several picks depending on the setting, large jam or living room picking, and depending on the music, bluegrass, classical, and...

Re: Always use a strap? Even when seated?

The now famous Mike Marshall video shows sitting, with a strap. What you will notice however, is that the strap is superfluous. It is not stabilizing the mandolin. Mike's right arm is stabilizing the...

    Mandolin Coffee Company

I don't know how I missed this, but there was a Mandolin Coffee Company. It ended in April of 2020 with Covid and all, but was alive for five years previous. I hope they can reemerge when the time is...
  10. Re: Article: Sharon Gilchrist's Mandos, Cars & Coffee Vlog Airs T

I hadn't realized the relationship between coffee and mandolins. I mean, I pretty much embody that relationship, but I didn't know it was a thing. I didn't know other players know about this thing.

Re: Always use a strap? Even when seated?

I am spoiled. When i was a very young grasshopper my dad brought home two old beat up guitars. My brother really took to guitar, but they came with these great old straps, that i acquired. They were...

Re: Another unmarked bowlback from the "attic"

Eastman makes real good fiberglass bowlback cases. I have one for each of my bowlbacks. They are light and really strong, and when not being played my bowls are locked in their cases. I use nothing...
  13. Re: Audiovisual cheat sheet for scales and modes

    Great job. Really great.

To my way of thinking this is the tool that goes in the middle.

In other words at a certain point in playing and listening modes become important. The tool you made...
  14. Re: Advice/Suggestions on characteristics of an ideal mandolin st

Something to keep in mind is where you are going to put the strap when not in play. I mean, if you are putting it in the case with the mandolin, a buckle or any metal extrusions could scuff up the...

Re: Left Hand on Neck: Palm or Thumb

I don't know about a tone difference. But I do notice a difference in my ability to note confidently, and hold the note confidently.

The ideal, I suppose, is the now famous Mike Marshall video.
  16. Re: Suggestions for Crooked and/or Polytonal Tunes?

This is an extremely good point. There's many a tune played crooked by this fiddler and straight by that one, or played crooked in this region and straight in that one.
  17. Re: Suggestions for Crooked and/or Polytonal Tunes?

My favorite kind of crooked is crooked phrasing, where the number of beats is different in this section or that. Three of my favorites in popular rotation right now: Texas (a.k.a Newcastle), Old Aunt...

  22. Re: OM closed position fingering and pinky and FFCP

Regarding FFcP on a regular mandolin - I find that four patterns reduces the amount of shifting I have to do. For example, if the melody moves up into the second octave, I just use the FFcP for the...

Re: Always use a strap? Even when seated?

If after playing a tune, put your left hand over your head. If the mandolin shifts position, or you panic and grip the instrument tighter with your right arm, it is an indication that your left hand...
