    Re: Yank and Sleepy

I associate "I Do Not Play No Rock 'n' Roll" with Fred McDowell. I liked his performance, but I'm referring to Nathan Beauregard (at 10 min.), who was possibly 106 years old. I was surprised to see...
  2. Found some autographed Bluegrass vinyl at my local store today!

Just thought I'd share this really cool find at my local music store here in Charleston (Monster Music). All of the Osbourne Brothers band members and also Bill Monroe! What a cool find!

    Re: Crazy Catania Creation!

Many "presentation" instruments made over the years (hey, check out Martin's D-100 guitar). Some made to compete in expositions and World's Fairs, some made for celebrity clients, some -- honestly...

According to Will Hoover's book "Picks!" they were first made with the left over celluloid material and were called Mosaic or Assorted Color picks. I never heard the term Clown Barf until years later...

    Re: Reasons to avoid practicing

I am hard-wired for oppositional behavior whenever faced with the word "practice". Like when I was 8 years old and my mother (bless her) would tell me, "I'd better hear you practicing that piano for...
  9. Re: Mandolin Brunch Throwback, 2005 - historic event

Yes, Mass Street Music is one of the premier shops in the country. They hosted two Mandolin fests, 04 and 05. I live about 40 minutes from Lawrence and I was able to attend both. Memorable weekends...

    Re: B7b9

Just because a lead sheet gives a chord such as B7b9, there is no requirement for you to play all 5 notes of that chord simultaneously. You can play 3 notes if you want. Or you can break the notes up...

  14. Re: When did Gibson stop using Handel tuners?

Dave Hicks wrote in Post #3, "My interest was casual, didn't get close enough to read any #s." Apparently he was at Vernon McIntyre's Famous Old-Time Music Company checking out the inventory.

  15. 'Good Vibrations' for 7 mandolins and 3 mandocellos

I haven't decided how well this video works, but it was inspired by a phenomenal piece of artistry. I remember hearing the original work while I was on my knees, scrubbing floors in Orwell, Ohio...

Took the liberty to increase the size of the text on this one. I have pretty good eyes but that's pretty hard to read and some aren't going to know how to use the browser tools to increase it.
