Re: Eastman MD315 or MD 515?

Oh, and as Eric pointed out, the 515 has a bound fingerboard and comes with a better case, vs unbound fingerboard and padded gig bag on the 315.

Re: Eastman MD315 or MD 515?

They're both fully hand-carved instruments, made from solid woods, with the same dimensions. The only difference is that the 505 has a glossy finish, while the 305 has a matt, more rustic finish. ...
  4. Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled

This has been really interesting! My personal favourite was No1. Really good to see the results, and also very interesting to see how the various mandolins sounded in the hands of two different...

    Re: Sarah Jarosz

Yep, saw her at the Brudenell club here in Leeds, UK. She spent most of the evening playing her Octave, but also did a couple of songs on mandolin. Amazing talent from all 3 band members, and a...

    Re: Eastman 315

Not a 315, but one of my sons has the A style 305. He's had it for a couple of years now, and it sounds and plays great. Make sure you have it well set up.

Re: Lifting bridge on a cheap acoustic guitar

NotMelloCello - I've been using the same guitar guy for all my guitar and mandolin servicing and repairs for almost 15 years now. He's very good, has very reasonable rates, and I trust him...

Thanks everyone, for the valuable advice.

So, I'm going to give it a try. What's the worst that could happen, right? :)

Thanks for all the feedback - it’s much appreciated. Will give it some serious thought as to how to proceed with it.

Re: Lifting bridge on a cheap acoustic guitar

Hi John, many thanks for taking the taking the time to provide such a detailed reply.

Didn't realise that it might take some plywood with it!

I think, for the cost of the guitar, vs the cost...

Lifting bridge on a cheap acoustic guitar

    Hi guys,

I realise that this is the Mandolin Cafe, not the Guitar Cafe! However, I'm guessing that most of the builders and repairers here are also experiencing in building/repairing guitars?

    Re: Kentucky KM900 strings

I remember being given a set of 10's to try out a number of years ago. Needed a string change on my F-style mandolin, so I gave the 10's ago. There was an immediate, and very audible, loss of...

    Re: Kentucky KM900 strings

As bradeasley has pointed out, the KM900 should easily handle 11's (Eg J74's). Which strings are on there at the moment? If, by light, you mean 10's, then you'll notice a significant increase in...

Re: Two new Hlavaty F5 mandolins

They are, indeed, made in Slovakia. I've never bought an instrument from Peter Hlavaty, but I did buy one of his yoke-style guitar capos after reading about them on the Martin forums. It's a...

Re: Two new Hlavaty F5 mandolins

They look and sound very nice. Nice playing too!

I notice that one has a long fretboard extension, and the other is shorter. Also the tailpieces are different on both.

    Re: Octave mandolin less-expensive choices

My youngest son bought a Trinity College last year, and it’s a very nice Octave mandolin. We also tried a Gold Tone but were both very underwhelmed with it.
