Re: Live Mic for Mandolin Recommendations

    In ear monitor?

I would also vote for an RM1 with hotplate. I own one and WOW, is it every loud! Some people would consider it obnoxious, but then so are some electric guitars in the hands of...
  2. Re: Resources for learning gypsy jazz / dawg style music

I think you meant Django Fakebook, correct? Yeah, I downloaded that a while ago and it is good for the chords and basic melodies.

I would be surprised if Django had a Facebook page! :)) (Yes, I...
  3. Re: Resources for learning gypsy jazz / dawg style music

I found a book about Stephane Grappelli's style and phrasing useful since he was the violinist in Django's Hot Club quintet. It is available through Mel Bay and I have no financial interest in making...

    Re: Temperature and Outdoor Gigs

Use sweat bands on your wrists like the ones used by basketball players. I found that it keeps sweat from running down my arms and onto my palms and the instrument.

Even in the heat, I use my best...

I had the good fortune of spending a week in Edinburgh one August back in .... forgot the year. Anyway, it was during the Fringe Festival, and I was in an apartment motel in the the Holyrood area...

Re: What's in public domain these days?

Charlie, you should check on some of the W.C. Handy tunes. If I remember correctly, both "St. Louis Blues" and "Beale Street Blues" are off copyright, for example.

    Re: What are your roles?

I started off in a duo whereby the musical partner let me pick the tunes, and play the solos, and then start singing tunes with lyrics (i.e., "songs"). Then I invited a bass player to join. The trio...

    Re: First Mandolin

I second this solution. Here is a photo showing the leather loop to which you can attach your leather strap. I checked out a photo of the Eastman MD305 and it does have a gap under the fingerboard...

One of the first times that my trio played in an assisted living facility, about halfway through a lady in a wheel chair yelled loudly "I'm ready to go to my room NOW!"

    Re: tuning machine ratios

They are Grover tuners. A couple of years ago, one of the tuning screws went bad on me. I searched around for something equivalent, and not too expensive, but the ratios were mostly 16:1 or so. I...

    Re: tuning machine ratios

I have a couple of mandolins. The 1979 Givens has 26:1 ratio which allows me to fine tune the pitch of each string. The 2015 Black has 16:1 tuners, which I find I have to mess with a bit more often...

Gorgeous wood on that mandolin! Can you post an audio or video file so we can hear what it sounds like? The sound holes are also very interesting shapes.
  23. Re: What’s going through your mind during a solo?

I picked up an arpeggio study put together by Mike Marshall and then took some online classes with Matt Flinner. Both got me learning basic phrases from which I venture off from with my own phrasing....
