Not really looking to be a sticky. This doesn’t pretend to be inclusive, esp of Mandolin Cafe topics. Just a random collection of things interesting to me.
Looks like this didn’t seem to ring many bells with anyone (other than one). Prob too basic fora mostly advanced forum.
Oh man, memory lane. I walked into Mandolin Bros in 1977. On the way to Europe with a $7 a day budget (and book, if you remember it) and a Eurail Pass. I used the money from selling my old Chevy...
Whew. Hope I haven’t wasted MC’s bandwidth or broken any rules. Doing this, I’ve noticed that some sections are woefully thin, mainly those farther along in the build, since I’ve been focused mostly...

I started compiling these in a Google docs about 6-7 years ago, planning to start building a mandolin. Life got in the way, plus two whitewater dory builds, and a few guitars and ukes. Now the time...
Thanks Richard., Dale and John. Would love to have a CNC but not in cards yet. Maybe if my production starts to approach Taylor numbers. :). I’m using Bishop Cochran bases with circle jigs, so no...
Not really directly mandolin related but I think there are also some guitar builders here too.
Does anyone have any comparison of end mills vs downcut spiral bits? I’m looking at some sources...
Question from a guitar builder looking at building both F5 and A style mandolins.
Do most folks here just bend by hand and then fit on an outside or inside mold? Or are there some successful...

I’m building a new workshop, no longer in the basement, and will have an embarrassing amount of new space. At least compared to the past.

This might set a forum record for oldest thread resurrrection. ;)
I build furniture too. But to be honest, even if I didn’t I’d still have bandsaw lust.
That’s my new set up. I have an old Delta 14” carrying an 1/8” blade and a new Laguna 18 Italian with a big resaw blade. So far very happy, but if I ever visit James’ shop in NC I’ll make it a point...
Agree with recent comments. Thanks much for allowing us to ride along. Sorry to see the end near. Time to start a new one!
Beautiful wood James.
I enjoyed talking to you the other day about neck jigs, dories and boating. Thanks.

I realize this is an older thread, but I was hoping you could tell me what size of reverse kerfing you use, or do you cut down pre-made guitar sets or make your own?
John or others,
Any recommendations for a replacement for the oil varnishes I and others have used in the past but can't seem to find now?
Thx
Jon
Thanks. Headstock height same as body at around .250" or is it smaller? I was looking at .125" since Axiom has several options for .060 and .090 at that height, either pre-made laminates or stuff I...
