Comfortable? C'mon guys! I know you like the (sonic) results, but that's kinda like asking "is that whale-bone lace-up corset comfortable?"
Oh, brother!
I was wondering how to get a $32 bid on an old bowlback....simple, put FOUR of 'em in a box! Hee hee, just kidding, well, sort of......:))
actually looks like a lot of fun for the right...
Currently at $555 with 90 minutes to go. NFI. I'm thinking it would be cost prohibitive to restore to like new. OTOH, depending on what you find upon inspection, it may be possible to restore to...
Hi Matt,
I think you have the right idea. This mandola has more in common with a flattop guitar than most mandolin/mandolas you normally see. Basically, check inside for loose braces, reglue...
Awesome!
I think you found a rare bird! FWIW, it looks like it is at an antique mall -- most of them have items from various consignors and I've found often the management will offer a 10% discount, just by...
I've never seen or heard of one, but based on the prices people ask for Earthwood basses and guitars, $400 might be a shrewd investment, IMHO. In other words, if you didn't bond with it, I'm sure...
The "feet" part was throwing me off until I remembered John Hartford's act of soft shoe tap dancing while fiddling! Not only put a smile on my face, but I put a 5-spot in the ol' tip bucket! Or was...
I think some of us are overthinking this. Obviously, you have to follow your own moral compass as to legalities, but keep in mind we are human and money talks. Don't sweat the definitions. Next...
Totally agree! I have had similar experiences touring with an American band throughout Europe. Once crossing from Croatia into Serbia we were stopped at the border by armed guards who asked what we...
OTOH, and probably unrelated.....I work for a shop, a customer brought in a vintage guitar for several repairs adding up to my estimate of $1400. I called the customer and explained the estimate in...
No luthier content, but watching the recent HBO doc on Tiger Woods, caused me to rewatch some online videos of his tournaments and do some online reading concerning his career and stats. His career...
Money is always great, but sometimes it is just as nice to get a follow up call, text, photo or video from a happy customer....
The old saying goes, "if you have to ask......"
Actually, I wondered the same thing. The article mentions Gilchrist spent over 100 hours over four months on this job. I'm no "Gilchrist", but my...
OK, sure, I remember this one! Gotta give Carter's credit for marketing -- I believe they've handled the "first" Loar, the first Les Paul "burst", currently they have the "first" spanish neck...
I assume this is available online to read? I just spent 20 minutes on the FJ site and haven't found it yet......a link would be wonderful...:mandosmiley:
My two cents, FWIW. First, nice instrument! Second, I'm not sure if you are tempted to restring it before taking it to the luthier -- if you are I would suggest lubricating the tuner gears first. ...
Nice looking sunburst. Enjoy your Muth!
To summarize: the answer seems to be "Other" followed not so closely by 9 big names most of us have never owned or even played....
In fairness, I have at least "heard" of all the big names...
I'd offer another perspective. $200 might be high for a Kay-made mandolin, but in the grand scheme of things, $200 doesn't buy much these days and I'd rather have a USA Silvertone than what $200...
My late father would tell you to stay out of direct "bright" sunlight....
(probably not the answer you are looking for....)
I'm surprised they didn't spam the title with "Loar era!"
Actually, a pretty cool piece of "case candy" and would go a long way to creating a "back story" for an instrument with a faded or...
I second changing the strings. I do a lot of setups for a local shop and most intonation problems are caused by strings going dead. Always start with the most simple, before making any adjustments,...
Gotta love the rustic photo of the old chair, books, and rubble.......
