I have a DYN-V, and use it on Mandolin, Mandocello and Mandobass. It works well on all 3 (one at a time, obviously).

Correct, the impedance of a DYN-M is much lower than a piezo pickup. Electrically, it looks much like a microphone. If you plug into a 1/4" jack, you will probably need to use an impedance...
C -- but I play Liuto Cantabile and Mandocello so bass clef is natural. A is horrible. Nobody wants to count that many ledger lines, and sight-reading it would be a crap shoot. B is acceptable,...
Hey Don -- thanks for posting the transcription. I've really enjoyed the process of getting it (mostly) under my fingers.
Why is notation for the mandola/octave mandolin/Irish bouzouki written in octave treble clef? Surely TENOR clef is the correct clef to use for this instrument. It fits the range of the instrument...
Here is a video (assuming that I embedded it correctly) of a guitar, 2 mandos and a dola playing St. Anne's Reel. The angle isn't great, but you can see enough of the fret board to make out the...
Bill -- I played Mandocello with the PMO, so it wasn't an issue. It seems to me that you can either put the "tonal divide" between plain and wound strings between the D and the A (with most sets),...
Back when I played with the Providence Mandolin Orchestra (1996-1998), the "standard load" on the L&H mandolins was a set of Savarez Argentine's with a Thomasik A (flat-wound).

Nice job. I bet she sounds as good as she looks, especially with the slightly longer scale length.
Did you try one of these? ;)

I have a black K-1. It has a truss-rod, and a post-Loar style bridge. The Gibson serial # database put it at about 1928 (which is at least consistent with its construction.
Unless something truly unexpected happens, I will be spending the next 6 months in Brussels, on sabbatical leave at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Does anyone know of any mandolin (or mandocello)...
OK, but whose tab system? French, German, Italian, Spanish.....
This year, the Canadian Club, a pick-up band of Canadians (and a few honourary Canadians) performed at the Open Mic. Thanks to Sue McLaughlin for organizing the group, and to Johanna Hebing for...

Alternately, you could call Bill Notation "Ukrainian" ;)
There are Ukrainian orchestras all across Canada (well from about Toronto to Vancouver). They all seem to be based on Mandolin family...
I played through it on mandocello last night. Using the cello, and playing a 5th down, darkens the sound a bit so the result might have been a bit more melancholy than intended -- or perhaps it was...
I use a Dyn-V on both mandolin and mandocello. It has a short cord to a mini-plug, and then a longer cord from the mini-plug to an XLR connector. I usually hook the mini-plug over my belt, to...
Yes, mandocellos tend to sustain practically forever. Sometimes, it's a good thing, and it adds depth to the sound, until the harmony changes. Try to dampen all 4 strings with a flat finger --...
I see that you are in Vancouver WA (not BC), so Seattle might be an easier commute than either Vancouver BC or Victoria. You might try the Seattle Mandolin Orchestra.
Nice job -- I've tried to learn this a couple of times, but lacked the persistence/patience (or perhaps skill) to get it anything close to acceptable. Maybe it's time to try again -- thanks for the...
Yes, I saw an F-holed Octar at CMSA this year. That was exactly my impression -- about a 95% scale copy of a K-5 mandocello.
I agree with Yvonne, the pinky is essential. I find that I tend to use either 124 or 134, depending on where the semitones lie (i.e. 1 finger covers 1 fret, except that the index finger can extend...
I started playing mandocello to fill a void in an orchestra. I joined shortly after their last mandocellist had moved away (it was a primarily English speaking group in Montreal, so there were lots...
Nice Job! Fantastic playing and conducting. The orchestra moves as one being, and manages to turn on a dime in between contrasting sections. Very dramatic.
