    Re: Orchestra

Playing with a mandolin orchestra and or a chamber group has been some of the most wonderful and rewarding musical experiences in my life.

This is, to an extent, relevant.

Re: Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

I think we are all prejudiced in our mandolin playing based on what our previous or first instruments were. The threads are choked with guitarists trying not to have a guitar accent on mandolin.

    Re: Tendonitis and string gauges

Please indulge my digression. If it does not apply, maybe it will help someone else.

I have told this story a few times. Many years ago now, I started having extreme pain in my left wrist and...
  5. Re: Basic Question: Vivaldi Concerto in D major RV 93

    I disagree with myself. :)

Listening to the videos posted by Eugene and Jim, as well as some others, I think for mandolin, plucking each note sounds more appropriate. There is a recording with...

Re: Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

Yes definitely. I find scales from any finger is a gigantically useful "thing to practice".

And FFCP goes through this really well.

  7. Re: Cheap beater mandolins that play, for leaving in the car etc?

Please all, leaving a mandolin in the car is hardly ever if not never a good idea.

I bristle at the idea of a mandolin, or any musical instrument being abused. Or even treated casually. I get...

    Re: Gold Tone TG-18

Bill McCall pointed out in a different thread regarding the tenth fret of a mandolin:

    Lowest note is G.
    Fifth fret on next string-G.
10th fret on next string is G.
15th fret on next string is...

Re: Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

I am not a fan of "there are no rules" really.

I mean I accept the plain meaning of the statement, and of course we each own our instruments and can play them anyway we want. There are no rules...

Re: Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

I think a lot of the confusion was my awkward description. My apologies. It is so awkward to describe this and much easier to show.

My fret number "assignments" only apply literally in first...

What is the difference between a banjo player and a US savings bond?

    Re: Books About Mandolins

It is a great book. It moved me to write this:
  14. Re: Overwhelmed beginner - merging of styles/genres?

Its the equating that is the issue. :) One might, for example, just as inaccurately start with the mandolin, and say that the guitar is that larger deeper, boomier, more complicated cousin to the...

Re: "Eight More Miles to Louisville"

I am going to have to agree with you.

And to answer Willy back in 2013

No more complicated than it needed to be. :)
  16. Re: Overwhelmed beginner - merging of styles/genres?

You are correct. And I ignored the guitar centric music, or music that has been played on or with guitar for so many years that its playing has been firmly adapted to guitar.

    I think that...

I don't know the recording well enough to answer, but your intuition is right, that arpeggios fit well in a thousand instances, and with slight modification a thousand times a thousand. Practicing...
  23. Re: Overwhelmed beginner - merging of styles/genres?

Peculiar, but that is what it is called. I suppose it makes sense when playing melodies way up the neck on the guitar that one might switch to a diatonic fingering. I could see in some cases it would...
  24. Re: Overwhelmed beginner - merging of styles/genres?

Yea sort of, if I understand you. :)

Chromatic just means every single note, naturals, sharps flats, everything. While Diatonic means only the the major notes of the scale.

    I mean, that when...
  25. Re: Overwhelmed beginner - merging of styles/genres?

Just a thought. To the OP. If you look at the mandolin as a "slice of the guitar", I would say the guitarist things that are "outside the slice" are guitar specific high level playing techniques, and...
