Re: Irish Bouzouki as first stringed instrument?

I started out in ITM with the bodhran then picked up the bouzouki, so I kind of did the same thing you are doing. I did play banjo some in college but then didn't play a stringed instrument for...
  2. Re: St Louis Tionol (with mandolin and tenor banjo workshop)

You may have already booked a hotel, bit in my experience it's more convenient to get a hotel just west of downtown. With the exception of Nerinx High School everything else (St Louis brewery,...

    Re: San Patricio

Don't know about more tunes but there was a movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120775/ . I thought it was a disappointment and tedious - too bad since the underlying story is so compelling.

Re: "TheSession.org" - Anyone know where it went?

I think they are having major site problems. I can get to the site but can't log in, and I can search for tunes but the resulting links all take me back to the new tunes list.

    Hopefully it will...

Re: Building a Celtic Pandora Station

Altan, De Danann, Dervish, plus all the ones above. The Dubliners did a lot of instrumentals besides the vocals and they played them pretty straight like you might hear in a session.

I think these are the same as the Hora bouzoukis under a different brand name. You might want to search the message board for "Hora" to get some more opinions. This picture is from the Hora...

    Re: Practice Quandry

Well hdismal I can kind of sympathize with you since I had a similar experience although I've only been playing for about a year. I don't play the mandolin but decided to learn the bouzouki, bought...

Re: Cooney's Reel on the mandolin

Cooney, Cooley, close enough. Who cares after enough Guinness anyway.

    Re: Volume "concerns" during practice?

Maybe not a popular answer for your wife, but if the baby gets used to a very quiet house that's what he'll want from here on out. If he gets used to music being played in the house he'll adapt...

    Re: Celtic chord progressions

Overall yeah, but you have to know the tunes and you have to listen to the melody players. Some reels don't sound right accenting 2 & 4, sometimes it sounds good on the A part but not the B, etc. ...
  14. Re: on the street where you live - songs i learned to love in nyc

Back in college I used to sing this as I walked by the dormitory where the girl I had a crush on lived. What can I say, I was a hopeless romantic.

    Re: Celtic chord progressions

I had to chuckle at this, I've been playing the bodhran about 10 years (and boy are my arms tired) and in bodhran discussion groups the advice is often to "follow the guitar".
