    Re: Virzi today...

That's OK, it's what we do here!

Anyway, a virzi is a fancy name for a baffle, or a "modified" baffle in this case. Basically, a low cost or no cost way to get a different sound. (better or...

Re: Buzz on open D string on jbovier ELS

FWIW, I've had bone dust/baking soda/superglue repairs that have lasted 25 years and still going on guitars I play. EVEN EASIER is a quicker fix I often use -- just put a squirt of superglue only...

I did some googling and found this cafe interview from 2010 with Roland White containing many vintage photos. As you scroll down,...

Re: Distressed Mandolin and Regular Playing

Along with that is a matter of "perspective," that is, to a kid today an 1982 Ibanez is a 40-year old "vintage" guitar. Whereas, a 21-year old Keith Richards in 1964 bought a "used" 1959 Les Paul --...

Re: Don't Lament -- "The One That Got Away"

I'm all for the "cheap thrills" of collecting. My sister retired and likes to go to a lot of yard sales. Usually she will send me a photo and ask if I want it, but sometimes she will just buy an...

I was also thinking the number font looks like Kay or Harmony.

Re: Distressed Mandolin and Regular Playing

Something I read years before the internet days, which I will attribute to Dan Torres, the amp guru. Basically, when discussing instrument finishes, he said " Have you ever picked up a can of paint?...

    Re: A4 back side repair

I worked for a shop doing vintage instrument repair. The owner's main focus was building custom instruments and finish work. He charged prices that I would be embarrassed to ask with a straight...

If I hear you correctly, you want to preserve the factory distressing, but not add to it?

    Re: 1976 Epiphone BG440

Also, since it is Guitar Center they have a 45 day money back return policy, so that gives you plenty of time to decide if it suits your needs, FWIW.

    Re: 1976 Epiphone BG440

I don't know where in CT you live, but if you are near a guitar center, they can ship the mandolin to a store near you, so you might save some shipping that way.

    Re: 1976 Epiphone BG440

I looked the model up on reverb and one sold for $444 and one sold for $499, so the price is right. Cool and uncommon 2-point body style -- I like it!

Re: Don't Lament -- "The One That Got Away"

Aside from the playability and tone of instruments we wish we had not gotten rid of is how vintage instrument prices have become such that many of the instruments I owned are no longer within my...
  18. Bondhus Screw Grab for stripped screw heads

I bought this product a year or so ago, and was disappointed that it didn't work for removing worn pickguard screws on a vintage guitar I was working on. Keep in mind, they were completely rounded...

    Yet another string winder thread

I misplaced my normal cheapo guitar string winder, so I went to my junk drawer and found a couple I haven't used for a while. The yellow Dunlop was just like every other cheap guitar...

Re: Don't Lament -- "The One That Got Away"

Another version of buyer's remorse and missed it remorse is the "I shouldn't have sold that one" or "I wish I had bought so and so 30-40 years ago."

Re: Distressed Mandolin and Regular Playing

Not sure if this counts, but something that came to mind is this famous story from rock'n'roll lore...(not Loar! ;))...the story, as I remember it from my youth, when the Beatles went to India to...
  22. Re: Djangolin, D.J. Hodson, Selmer Mandolin

I love the look, but I have never had a chance to play one. Same with the guitars -- I've only had a chance to play some of the lower priced ones -- never a good one, so I will reserve judgement for...

  25. Re: Dark trails appeared on the neck of my mandolin

I've seen this before, but I am not sure what it is.

I wouldn't be to quick to assume it is worms. Right now it is mostly a cosmetic condition, if you can live with that. If not, get a different...
