I have a stack of mandolin orchestral arrangements from eastern europe circa 1920s... I'll dig them out and you make them available if anyone is interested.

This is not an arrangement of Paganini's "moto perpetuo" but an original Solace composition in a similar style.
Without à doubt, one of the most important if not the greatest violinist of all time. His recordings maintain a freshness that I have never experienced with any other musician. I studied violin with...
I agree with you about good player better than bad player (regardless of instrument) and that the 'sound' must be convincing but my point is that this music was written with certain instruments and...
I've played Rocco's serenade and, it is indeed very difficult, not nearly as physically challenging as many of Stauffer's solos. Stauffer is usually writing with full stops pulled, in other words 4...
I agree with Joe, caprices 13/14/16 and 20 can be played straight. 24 needs to be arranged and I personally don't like it (much easier on the violin) on the mandolin. If the solo works already...
Ì could not get the Newtone strings to intonate correctly on the short scale (normal scale) classical mandolin. On the Gibson mandolin, no problem. Do these strings work for you on the Embergher?
Excellent performance Buzz! It's nice to hear this played with direction, good rhythm and such nice phrasing. Bravo!
Yes a lot of MOP but an equal amount of 'glue' to keep the stuff in place. I'll pass on this one.
Interesting to hear Mike M. performance... he plays with conviction and amble musicality, very charismatic musician. However, I doubt seriously that this way of playing would project without...
Seriously Robert, we're not going to find much evidence of mandolinists of this era playing such works in public. As I said before, you hardly see much programming by violinists of the time...
Well, start browsing all the old trade magazines of the day... I'll try to help you out when I've cleared my desk of the last vestiges of 2011. Basically you look at their programs and that will give...
I believe Abt would have been familiar with Bach's solo works but their programming was much more general public oriented. As I said before, the violinist of the early 20th century all played Bach,...
I have an interesting recording of Pettine performing the Ciaconna from the 2nd Partita, recorded at the end of his long life. Of course, Bach's music can be convincingly played on the mandolin...
Ok boys, I must be close to being the closest to these old timers having studied with Albert Bellson and having known Pettine himself. I also researched these players in depth a number of years ago....
At one time I owned 2 18th century style (copies) neapolitan mandolins. The one with the slightly wider string course separation was easier for this technique. With a bit of practise it is possible,...
I'd be happy to lend Ferdinand a fine mandolin if necessary (perhaps the Larson Embergher copy)... let him know and have him contact me. Very sad news in anycase.
While we are on the subject of Ranieri, does anyone have the piano part to his D major concerto for mandolin? I seem to have lost it some years ago and would greatly appreciate having it again.
I have at home (on loan) an original 20's period Embergher (5 bis in mint condition) and two copies: one by dan larson, the other by lorenzo lippi. The original is very fine indeed but, to tell you...
Impossible from this Youtube presentation...most likely better than what you hear (recording and digitalization is really quite poor).
Great material for making picks and probably the right gauge or thickness for the Ranieri/Roman style pick are old imitation piano ivory. In otherwords the keytops made from celluloid 'ivory' piano...
I agree with the others, the neapolitan mandolin (especially the modern or romantic version) is less well suited to the guitar/lute type left hand slur effect. I do believe that it is possible to...
I've seen friction tuners for mid/late 19th century mandolins (banjos). That is, a type of mechanical friction tuner, not the simple wood peg. Anyone familiar with the simple wood peg in the typical...
