Re: Rubner tuners on Eastman MD305?

FINALLY -- Tri-Flow getting some bad press on this forum! That's a new one! FOR YEARS, America's go to lube in a squirt can was WD-40, but the mere mention of it for instrument repair on this forum...

    Re: Shipping Calton Mandolin Case

FWIW, the local "big" music store saved their boxes for me and would leave them on the loading dock. I'd fill up my cargo van and drive off, often not unloading until the next morning. More than...

How about shop dust is a sign that things are getting done?

Something like the cluttered desk analogy....

I'm not sure about the mandolin, but the case belongs in the homemade hardshell case hall of fame/shame.......! :disbelief:

    Re: First World Problems

Makes me think of those "mirrored" pickguards that were popular a few years ago. In a night club you could reflect the spotlight into the face of the boyfriend of a cute girl, just to mess with him....

    Re: Pawn Shop F5L

Thanks for the follow-up. I missed the relisting and sale. 20 years ago shill bidding was common on eBay, basically get an "out of town" friend to bid up an item and when the auction is over, tell...

    Re: Pawn Shop F5L

In the last 30 seconds priced jumped from $3028 to $6800, which was the final selling price! NFI. (I wish my eBay auctions would do that!)

Three days ago the seller added that he would accept...

    Re: Stahl Mandolin

Even though Brazilian rosewood was readily available 100+ years ago, in general, it was still only used on the better instruments.

Also, I have seen many 100+ year old instruments with Brazilian...
  10. Re: How to Keep a Headstock Tuner from Damaging Your Instrument

Sorry, doesn't do "it" for me, FWIW. Granted, tuning is nice. I think tuning before each song is overkill. I think having it "on demand" is beyond ridiculous, IMHO.

    And, again, it's an "add-on"...
  11. Re: How to Keep a Headstock Tuner from Damaging Your Instrument

Dependency on a tuner is probably the subject of another thread, but years and years ago - like 40-50 years - the mark of a professional musician was the ability to tune without such devices. There...

Re: Worm under, Worm over? A visual guide.

Supposedly Rubner's are great tuners, but visually I can't get past the black knob shafts. Looks ugly (and cheap) to me, which I'm sure was not their intention.

Like 30-35 years ago when Mercedes...
  13. Re: How to Keep a Headstock Tuner from Damaging Your Instrument

FWIW, I have a "buddy" who, in 40 years of playing professionally and semi-professionally part-time, has never bought a pick, a set of strings, a tuner, a guitar cable, etc. -- he has managed to get...

    Re: Tail piece repair

I see the problem. A quick search on both Google and eBay shows several choices for guitar, but none for mandolin in this style. I would say unless one can be obtained from the maker, then repair...

Re: Unique Ball End to Loop End conversion

I guess weird strings are better than no strings......

When I worked at a guitar shop it was fairly common to see "knotted" strings, usually behind the nut or bridge......that is, the broken...

    Re: Carbon Fiber Mandolin Raffle

The local Lions club raffled off a brand-new Harley about 15 years ago and I bought 4 or 5 tickets and didn't win. Everytime I go past their booth at the fair it makes me mad. Furthermore, and to...
  19. Re: Why did Gibson return to Paddleheads after Snakeheads?

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

    Exactly!

When I worked a a vintage guitar shop, we had a local wannabee folk artist type who was buying all the cool cheapo vintage guitars to use as his canvases.
No, no, no, no these humble...
