    Re: Crossrock Mandolin Cases

Every violin case on the market, no matter how cheap or expensive, has a strap to hold the neck in place. It usually closes with velcro. Keeps the instrument from shifting in the case if the fit is a...

In order to declare you the winner we need a translation, Soliver. I know what a trash panda is, I'm familiar with the concept of a banana, and people—yeah, that word makes sense. It's the...
  4. Re: Latest ignorant question: Bout like "boot" or like boxing mat

Probably as many reasons as writers, maxr. I worked as an editor for a time and saw just about every variety of misplaced capital out there. There are people who capitalize most nouns, usually just...

It goes back before the smart phone. I blame desktop publishing. Instead of hiring pros who are trained in design, proofreading, editing, fact-checking, and other useful skills to produce printed...

You should of known someone would bite. Alot of mandolin player's are grammer nuts, it seems.

Are the wedding couple millennial? There is some bizarre millennial obsession with "Africa."

Re: Lyon & Healy serial numbers

I just got out a flashlight and checked. I have a Style B, serial number in the 200s. It is indeed stamped, but on the block for the point and not the rib itself. Interesting!

Sheila, just a friendly reminder: there's no such thing as "just looking" when it comes to puppies, kittens, or mandolins.

    That said, enjoy it!

Re: Want to take up the cello

    Best advice: find a teacher.

Johnson Strings is in the Boston area and they carry everything from beginner instruments to violins and cellos we mere mortals can only dream about. Renting is a...

    Re: Collings, Northfield, Girouard

Two Ellis A5 Deluxes showed up in the classifieds today, and I immediately thought of this comment.

Same color, same appointments, both at The Music Emporium, both with Calton cases. New: $6700....

Re: Mandolin world vs fiddle world

Maxr, I would guess the bow hold changed in the early 19th century as the style of bow introduced by F.X. Tourte caught on—basically the same design used today. Romantic-era music calls for much...

Re: Mandolin world vs fiddle world

Jim, I have been tempted to take one to the contradances I (used to) play for. Jigs and reels are pretty darn baroque, and it seems like the speedy little bow would be just the ticket.
