Re: Feedback on a magnetic pickup

Just a technical note for clarification - piezos and magnetic pickups work differently from most microphones in my experience.

A microphone has a diaphragm with a voice-coil of windings around the...

Re: Feedback on a magnetic pickup

Both piezo and magnetic have their advantages and disadvantages. Tonally neither is correct; I find a blend of the 2 to be the best short of micing.

K&K are piezo-based and will feedback at...
  3. Re: The Dilemma of Motivation, Attention Span, and Practice Regim

The single biggest change I think one can make is switching dedicated practice time from late in the day to early in the morning, and doing it at least 3 times a week. I did it every day switching...
  4. Re: Entry level tenor: Recording King or Ibanez?

I've heard generally very good things about Thomann. Everything from product to price, shipping and customer support gets good reviews so be sure to let us know how it works out.

    Re: Vintage Regal Tenor Guitar

I'd like a better look at the neck heel and string height at the 12th fret. If it needs a neck reset any pricing advantage is quickly lost in repairs.

OTOH it looks to be in generally good nick so...
  6. Re: Djangolin, D.J. Hodson, Selmer Mandolin

Now defunct Paris Swing was a mandolin and guitar line catering to the gypsy jazz crowd. The mandolins didn't follow the Selmer/Mac styling but the guitars did.

    They did some pretty interesting...
  7. Re: Entry level tenor: Recording King or Ibanez?

I noticed they have a short-scale (23-ish inch) acoustic bass with a solid top. Curious how that would do strung as a tenor?
  8. Re: Entry level tenor: Recording King or Ibanez?

I've not tried either of those but IIRC both are laminate builds. Of those two I'd try the Recording King first.

My preference would be the Harley Benton CLT-20S

  9. Re: Looking for Recording Equipment Suggestion

An H6 is overkill. It's intended for pro a/v field work with multiple audio sources and for that an H5 works fine.

I have a couple H4s, the older ones, that come in very handy. Easy to use, great...

    Re: 5-string mandolin for beginner?

I would suggest you not discount the Gold Tone or other lower-end instruments as others suggest. There is very little by way of inexpensive 5s so you may have to put in some work to get a cheapy...

    Re: 5-string mandolin for beginner?

I came at 5-string after learning 4/8 and had a bugger of a time getting my head around the extra string. And it's not like I don't understand extended tuning - I play 5-string bass and 7-string...
  12. Re: Pick Choice on Electric Mandolin vs Acoustic

I use different picks - Jazz III with the 5-string electric and Dunlop .71 mm for acoustics.

Re: Getting into Jazz Tenor Guitar?

That's largely why I think 5-string mandolin is a good fit. You get compatibility with fiddle tuning but also have the lower CGDA tenor tuning for comps etc.

Re: Beware this Fender FM60E at Guitar Center

It is a roll of the dice, that's for sure.

I just so happens I got my Fender FM60E from a Guitar Center used listing. I caught it just after it was put up without a picture. The price was so...

Re: Recommendation for a Jazz Mandolin

If you can find one the Paris Swing John Jorgenson signature model was designed by Greg Rich specifically for gypsy jazz. Greg is a former Gibson builder who went on to design "The Loar" mandolins...
  16. Re: Gibson Must Now Face Antitrust Litigation in Heritage Case

A conceptual note on trademark rights might help some misconceptions.

Consider that when you go into a store and purchase a beautiful F-5 mandolin and take it home you own that mandolin. It is...
  17. Re: Gibson Must Now Face Antitrust Litigation in Heritage Case

There was a lot going on in the 1960s and 1970s. I remember it well. The many and varied problems with the MI industry were no different from the rest and trying to enforce trademark rights was so...
  18. Re: Gibson Must Now Face Antitrust Litigation in Heritage Case

That makes sense and is consistent with business practices of the day.

Back then there was no internet, computers and no ability to stop counterfeits at the border. Everything was done on paper....
  19. Re: Gibson Must Now Face Antitrust Litigation in Heritage Case

From what I understand of the Dean case the jury did in fact find Dean guilty of counterfeiting Gibson product.

It basically came down to this - Gibson created the designs, used them in commerce,...
  20. Re: Gibson Must Now Face Antitrust Litigation in Heritage Case

Yeah, in the early days of the software business it was considered a good thing to have a 10 - 15% piracy rate because it expanded your products usage. When the pirates came to a point where they had...
  21. Re: Gibson Must Now Face Antitrust Litigation in Heritage Case

Do you know if Gibson has a valid trademark registration for the F-5?
  22. Re: Gibson Must Now Face Antitrust Litigation in Heritage Case

I believe this may lack some context. The legal entity known as Gibson has been doing business since the late 1800s. Trademark law was enacted in the US in 1947 (iirc) by way of the Lanham Act;...
  23. Re: Oval hole mando comparable to a Kentucky KM-505?

If you can find one the Paris Swing John Jorgenson (MS-140-BK) is a lovely mandolin.

It's essentially a Gibson snakehead with Gypsy Jazz styled soundhole (petite D) & cutaway and F-5 style tone...
  24. Re: Gibson Must Now Face Antitrust Litigation in Heritage Case

The general legal definition for "trademark" (legal definitions are subject to change) is it is something that identifies the source of the goods. That "something" can be a logo, name, bottle shape,...

Re: Alternate Reality Fender Tenor Tele

Then you're the person to ask.

Can you tell from how it's made whether or not it is a "real" Squier or could it be something someone put together with some parts and decals? Not sure why someone...
