    Re: Intonation woes

It is impossible to judge your setup from the pic. You can fret the string at 2nd fret and notice gap between the string and first fret, ideally it would be zero (meaning the nut slots are at the...

The lightning and background color make it appear different. On darker background or changed lightning it would look tighter. Also looks like the pics were taken from some...

    Re: Tight Waverly's

There's always possibility of drilling imperfection if the holes are out of square. On mandolins there are two possible problems. one is alignment/squareness other is spacing between posts. Third...

Re: No frills vs fancier mandolins

Different producers do it differently. Most small makers do the same quality of work on all instruments and save only on bling and fanciness of wood. big companies can be different.

Re: Back contours for an A5

The traditional Gibson arch was always high towards neck block and didn't strictly follow the outside shape. This implied the thickness above neck block and sudden dip in inside carved area where the...

    Re: Suitable for a neck?

I've made some necks from pieces just like that. Two pieces with black strip of ebony glued in between. No problems. I actually prefer wood with radial (quartered) surfaces facing the player, not the...

  10. Re: How to repair a gap between back plate and binding on 1914 A3

Agree, it looks like full separation from block and/or back. Lining may still be attached to top or side but the binding was stuck to side well so it took it with. If it is glued together in this...

I have old Narex chisels (they are local to me so logical choice) and they are good. Not the best in world but not bad. I have very old version with indestructible black hard rubber/plastic handle...

    Re: Kentucky Mandolin Pickguard Attachment

The metal piece functions just like the more standard plastic block glued underneath the pickguard. In this case the piece is screwed onto pickguard and the bracket rod is inserted through the two...

Re: What's your preferred staining or dying method?

If you apply too much dye some may be left on the surface and if it is suspectible to the solvents of the finish it may cause the OP problems.

    Re: Atypical top wood?

AFAIK, linden basswood and lime all refer to the same species of Tilia. in EU it's mostly Tilia cordata, in US Tilia americana. Soft easy to carve wood, favored by woodcarvers.

    Re: Kentucky Mandolin Pickguard Attachment

I think, the OP believes the bracket should sit on the top of mandolin. This is not the case, the bracket (U saped or simple block style) should float ABOVE the top and NOT touch it at all otherwise...

Re: Vintage Bridge Placement - Wrong from the start?

I'd say many folks used light strings and didn't play much above 7th fret so they didn't feel the need to adjust the bridge to perfection (even though the Gibson brochures described the process AFAIK)

I would say most makers prefer stiff and less dense wood... especially violin makers won't go over some density for spruce, they rarely even consider red spruce because it is heavier in average....

Gibson used similar 3D pattern carving duplicators like other woodworking factories of the day. Chairmakers used them in 19th century, powered by steam engine till beginning of 20th century.
