    Re: Confused By 4 Strings

The history of the electric bass is a bit weird because it was sort of a combination of an upright bass and a guitar. All the first players were upright bassists and it's normally played in a style...

Re: Thomann review: From Germany to US

I've been thinking about getting a tenor guitar and that seems like a good deal, what model did you get?
  3. Re: How much of a difference in sound does string gauge make?

I've already done a lot of exploring with picks and I'm far from done, and I have found that they can make a big difference, not just in the thickness, but material and shape too.

Re: Feedback on a magnetic pickup

I think magnetic pickups will be a lot less likely to have feedback, but they will sound very different, more like an electric guitar.

If you really want to kill all feedback, a solid body...
  5. Re: How much of a difference in sound does string gauge make?

Good idea! I'll definitely do this.
  6. Re: How much of a difference in sound does string gauge make?

The price is one thing that really attracts me to trying out strings instead of trying to trade in my Kentucky - I figure I don't need anything too fancy as my back-up but I do want it to sound nice...
  7. Re: How much of a difference in sound does string gauge make?

This is what I was thinking I'd do; just wanted to check if it was likely to make a difference before I went ahead and ordered a bunch of strings.

Follow-up question: what sort of strings would...
  8. How much of a difference in sound does string gauge make?

I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it for me to switch string gauges. I have light gauge strings on my Kentucky A-style, which seem like they are a little easier to play than the medium gauge...

Re: DO I need a better mandolin?

There are some really good instruments in that price range that could be a "last" instrument; Mid-Missouri, Kentucky, Eastman all make really nice models around that price range. You might even be...

Re: Old New Guy -Any second day tips?

If you plan to join jams, learn to pick out chords from songs you don't know in real time. That way you can play accompaniment to songs you dont know yet. I do this by listening to recorded songs...

    Re: Bog Street Picks?

The grippy bits look nice! I wish they had a more rounded triangle though.

Re: Tune a ukulele like a mandolin

I have a soprano uke tuned GDAE but am not the biggest fan. The sound is muddy compared to my mandolins and the chords are hard to play for me because the neck is wider than a mando. Using a pick...

    Re: Pandemic based inflation

I doubt new mandolins will go down much, but I do suspect used ones will. The pandemic brought about a lot more people with time on their hands and a reduction in number of new instruments being...
  17. Re: Looking for different mandolin music to learn-obscure/nonstan

That whole Cory Wong album is awesome. I love that he brought in 3 different amazing bluegrass players (Sierra Hull, Bela Fleck, and Billy Strings) for his funk album.
  18. Re: Looking for different mandolin music to learn-obscure/nonstan

I really liked Sierra Hull's most recent album, which is pretty bluegrass inspired but is definitely non-traditional.
  19. Re: What Are Some Good Options in the $2-3k range?

There are several solo builders that will make an A style for 3k, I'd check if there's one near you that you could visit and try out a mando. That's what I did and I feel like I got an instrument...

Congrats on the Morris! That back is real pretty. I love mine (#487) and think it's been a fantastic instrument to learn on.

    Re: Wood Anatomy

You're not wrong, but you are kind of missing the point.

In order for the wood to move the air, the strings need to move the wood, which requires sound being transmitted through the wood. ...

    Re: Sigma Mandolin?

There is a Kentucky KM- 272 on the classifieds right now for $350 shipped, I'd look there instead of a Sigma for that price.

New Kentuckys aren't that cheap any more, sadly. You could easily get a nice used one for that though.

Re: What's the best way to dust my fretboard?

I use a plush microfiber cloth like this one

    https://www.fender.com/en-US/accessories/care-cleaning/factory-microfiber-cloth/0990523000.html

Works well for applying fretboard conditioner, too.
