Re: What is that little instrument?

I was once asked if I was "playing a little banjo." I replied I would prefer as little banjo as possible.

    Re: Pick Talk

Started out with rounded ones, and really liked the Wegens, but switched a while back to the triangles with the slightly rounded points. They seem to articulate better, although it takes a bit of...

    WOW!

    So intricate, and so beautiful!
  5. Re: My latest build: A Mandocello/Liuto Cantabile/Cittern hybrid

Another beautiful instrument from your hands. Is it tuned C-G-D-A-E?
  6. Re: Roadie 2 or Roadie 3 Automatic Tuner and Winder

I am often amazed at the data some apps collect that has nothing to do with what the app is supposed to do. Like collecting location, or wanting access to contacts, or the ability to use the camera....
  7. Re: Roadie 2 or Roadie 3 Automatic Tuner and Winder

Dunno, I seem to recall that the problem with the Gibson tuners was the weight, the cost and that they were a special item that not a lot of folks wanted, but Gibson was pushing them nonetheless.

  8. Re: Roadie 2 or Roadie 3 Automatic Tuner and Winder

Hmm, might be interesting for those of us with arthritis or other finger/thumb joint issues.

Although, I have to say, I am getting a little tired of gadgets that have to link to a phone app. They...

    Re: Homemade Tuning Peg Tool

Yeah, me too, if the price were reasonable. I am mostly OK with larger guitar tuner buttons for right now, but the smaller mandolin buttons are a problem. Now, if it had the "crossways" slots that...

    Re: Homemade Tuning Peg Tool

I like it! As a fellow arthritis sufferer, I would love to have one, but my woodworking skills, such as they are (not), are probably too rudimentary for success.

    Cool idea!

    Really liking 1, 2 & 4.
  12. Re: Dose anyone know anything about this mandolin or its value

Also our reliance on the spellchecker and/or autocorrect features. Or, as my loving and long-suffering spouse and I call it, "auto-incorrect." 🤷🏻

    Carry on.
  13. Re: Gilchrist Using The Tone Traveler On Mike Compton's Mandolin

Those of us who have Old Wave instruments can attest to the genius of Mr. Bussmann. 😸

    Re: Ever wonder?

Admittedly off-topic, but last night on Jeopardy, the answer was a picture of an Appalachian (a/k/a mountain a/k/a lap) dulcimer, and one contestant's answer was "What is a banjo?" I nearly...

    Bill!

Glad to see you here again!

What's the back on the Sandia Spruce?

    I don't need another Old Wave......or do I?

Re: Need advice between two guitars.

Well, they both have solid tops and laminated sides & back. If the specs I saw online are correct, they both are 1 11/16 at the nut, which is pretty standard, although many folks (me included) prefer...
  18. Re: Anyone tried this mandolin-friendly guitar tuning?

A tuning that Joni Mitchell used a lot is CGDGBD. See "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire," "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow" and others. I read somewhere that her use of the tuning was inspired by a...

    Re: Travelling With Mandolin

You don't say how far you're traveling, but given the small size of a mando, and the large overheads and plenty of under-seat storage on Amtrak cars that I've been on, I don't see a reason to risk...

    Re: "The Tree"

Interesting direction here; it sort of reminds me of the discussions of a few years back about "bear claw" spruce tops.

Wasn't it Dana Bourgeois who said the "luthier's dirty little secret" was...

Re: My latest build: An orpharion

Wow! Mind completely blown! I mean, the strings (courses), the body shape, the frets, the back, the tuning! Just a remarkable instrument. Another beautiful piece of your work.

    Re: Pick Edges

I have used a similar nail buffer on my fingernail tips for years (I'm primarily a fingerstyle guitar player). They give the nails a nice smooth edge that gives an attack on the strings without...

    Re: Old Wave F Style

I have an Old Wave F-4 style, built for me by Mr. Bussmann. It's exactly what I was looking for in an oval hole F style, clear voice, pretty loud, smooth tone, resonant, with a lot of the old Gibson...
