My first mando was an Oscar Scmidt F-model. It was a great first instrument. While the tone was a bit thin and quiet, it played GREAT all the way up the neck, with near-perfect intonation.

For all the nights I cursed your name while humping my 200-watt stack out of CBGB'S at 3am, I apologize. If I'd really meant it, I'd have bought a Twin.
Not a hip-hop fan here either, but I enjoyed that more than I thought I would.
These are the inferior instruments made from Dominican cigar boxes. Although technically illegal, you can still find Cuban cigar box instruments out there. NFI.
Wow. No idea such an animal even existed.
VERY cool.
Agreed. Thanks, Jim.
The surprise in those stats, for me anyway, is the huge number if posts in the Classical, Medieval, Renaissance forum.
Welcome to the insanity...
Well, the Dave Appollon Films certainly pre-date this.
This was my first mando. Little tone to speak of, but it played with fantastic action and intonation all the way up the neck. A great starter instrument.
Amen. Many of these kids think they're actually making music. It's a quick bandaid on the itch to really make music, the same itch that brought so many of us so much joy, and, ultimately, to this...
Nothing new to add, but wanted to echo what a beauty that (first) mando is.

It's dated July 9, 1923, and is an unparalleled paragon of the photographic arts. Some say this is due to the emulsion used,...
Very similar to, but nicer than, my first mandolin, a Dofra, bought in a Manhattan thrift shop. It was all the mando I needed for a few years. Did yeoman duty in two bands. Still have it. May...
Nothing? The point is to play in tune, right?
But we all seem to be in various stages of agreement: it's rude to both the audience and to your fellow players to take up time and interrupt the...
Sadly, it appears to my untrained eye that the fallen branch of the oak was cut into pieces far too small for use in instruments, floors, barrels, or anything else short of firewood.
However, when...
There's a thread somewhere here about that photo. Perhaps someone better at the "search" function than me can unearth it.
I hate electric tuners.
I have a good ear. When I played guitar for a living, I never used a tuner of any sort. I deferred to the natural tempering of the individual instrument and how it fit in...
Many, many thanks, folks, for all of the great input and info.
Sorry for the delay, folks.
For the curious, I present The Leaves:

Another vote for the Mann. I'm not a 5-string electric kinda guy, but those things look sweet.
Yes, Earnest, my statement of the cross-section being two feet in diameter is referring to the fallen branch, not the base of the tree itself. And, Clark, I'll try to get a better pic of the pores...
