Re: Information on The Loar Lm-590-VS

I had this 590MS for a while. I imagine your variant is very similar.
It was a great starter mandolin, but I sold it on in order to get a Kentucky KM-1000B.

Re: Just got a tone-gard a couple days ago

I have one on my Kentucky KM-1000. It helps when I'm out busking.
But, I don't use one on my 1924 Gibson A2Z. That fella only goes to indoor jams.

    Re: Best Flat-top/Pancake/Army Navy Mandolin?

There was one at Gryphon not too long ago that really knocked me out. I had no need for it, so somebody else got it. But they are worth tracking down.

    Gus Ingo's Mandolin Album

I was not familiar with this Virginia boy.
Here he is in 1979 with Wayne Henderson on guitar.
    He's got the licks!

  5. Re: Underrated Gibsons - the A2 and A3 stepchildren

My 1924 blacktop snakehead A2Z (that's what the label says) is "The One" for me. I have a Kentucky KM-1000B I use to play with my busking group, but this A is the one I play at home and at sheltered...

Re: Multiple photos in classified ads

You could put a link to a Dropbox or Google Drive share and put more photos there.
  8. Re: Jam Etiquette / Rules Question - Should songs be banned

For some reason, a mandolin player in our jam hates "Red Haired Boy", so we never play it. But, my busking group does play it as a medly with "Salt Creek". And we do "Wagon Wheel", as well.

    Re: 8 string tenor guitar

My wife's tenor is in "Chicago tuning", like a baritone uke DGBE. There are no rules. I saw a Dixieland plectrum banjoist playing in that tuning last week.
    Here's my wife's 1931 Gibson TG-0.

    Re: RIP Frank Ford

I'll miss his wit and knowledge, both online and in person. He pretty much invented current restoration practices.

There are two mandolins here because of Gryphon, and several more instruments...
  13. Re: Is "Mr Sun Plays Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Suite" bluegrass

Saw them in Monterey last night. Who cares what you call it? Mr. Sun is 4 brilliant musicians at the top of their game channeling Duke Ellington in an original way. Just dig it! Not everything has to...
  14. Re: Wonderful Gibson 1910's Oval Holes (no love?)

This 1924 A2Z is all I play now except when I busk with my band - then I use my Kentucky KM-1000B.

Re: Stew Mac "Elite" mandolin tuners

My 1920 Martin A got refurbed by Dave Musselwhite maybe 25 years ago and he put Elites on it. They were good tuners.

Re: Looking for info regarding A style Gibson

According to the info on this page, yours is probably a 1934 since the serial number is higher than the last one of 1933 and doesn't have a letter suffix like those from 1935-1939. But, Gibson's...

Re: Vintage Instruments music shop, Philly

If you've ever watched Antiques Roadshow on PBS, you've often seen Fred Oster consulting on vintage instruments. His Vintage Instruments shop is one of the best.

    Of course! Blacktop every day!

BTW, the 1929 A0 is for sale in the Classifieds. I'd love to keep it, too, but the arrival of the Snakehead means one has to go. :(

    Re: Blacktop Friday

It's stamped on the neck block twice. The one on the left looks like 11899. The one on the right could be the same, or possibly 11999. Neither one is very clear. The first "9" might have had a 0...
