Thanks, Bill. I'd seen his ads for instruments, didn't know he sold strings, too - choices, even!

I'm down to my last set. Who sells ball-end sets? My usual sources, Elderly and Sweetwater, don't seem to carry such a thing. (I could buy single strings and make my own sets, of course.)

Thanks - they cross lyrics, so I get them mixed up.

Definitely not a bluegrass version - last solo is electric mandolin.

It's a boy, Mrs. Walker, it's a boy.

That was great - mysterious and deep.

I bought a used Big Muddy for $400 couple months ago - it's fine.
I played a Goldtone flattop (GM10) recently. Not bad (but thick finish and changing the strings is said to be difficult). $600...
First recorded by Doc Watson. I was reminded of the song by Hannah Sanders' and Ben Savage's great recent version.

I've been thrown out of a number of barrooms for not drinking enough.

I've used a TC Unitune for several years. It's been on and off many instruments, in cases, in my pocket and it's still holding up really well. Small and inconspicuous it's not, though.

I prefer a big honkin TC Unitune. Bought a mandolin that came in a case covered with stickers - fine by me. I also dress funny.

Congrats - looks familiar! (Mine's a September '85.)

The twisted string is not ideal, but it will probably work, but might not stay in tune that well if the wraps slip past each other. You can loosen it up, reorient the string with forceps or pliers,...
A friend of mine is a model train collector. He went to a show and asked to look at a particular item. The vendor said, "Sure, but if you get a good look at it, you'll need to buy it." Which was...
I often play A as G 2240 E, barring the G and D strings with 1st finger. Am is 2230. If the E string rings it's fine, since it's part of the chord.
In some cases you might want to mute a...
Soundhole plugs to cut feedback of an amplified instrument are readily available for guitars*, but don't fit the smaller soundhole of a flattop mandolin, which in this case is 60mm, or 2 3/8". Are...
Here's Jake Wildwood's detailed look at a Slingerland b-m; the headstock looks not unlike the one in the video.

Nope - I'm only 71!

Carter Fambly stuff is easy to pick up.

I don't think I've heard a minor-key Hank tune before. It reminds a bit of Dylan's Man in the Long Black Coat.

They're one of the acts I'm looking forward to seeing at Merlefest in a few months.

Good tunes do get passed around.
I've found a few sources on the history, which all say about the same thing. e.g. ""King of the Fairies" appears to be derived from a Jacobite tune called "Bonny...

An Irish set dance, though perhaps derived from an earlier Scottish or English tune. The outro is taken from the instrumental interlude in...
