    Re: Mandolin Banjo?

While not as loud you can still hear the mandolin, and the banjo mandolin has a nice sound. That's what it should sound like, I do like if for other music too.

Took me years to figure out lighter...

Re: Fretting sharp on the 12th fret E string

I could easily be the 13th fret is loose and raised up slightly, enough to interfere with the note on the 12th fret. A slight tap should reseat the fret. Hold the string down at the 12 fret and look...
  4. Re: Advice needed for complement to my Weber Gallatin F Mandolin

I think if you want the deeper sound of an oval mandolin stay with a short neck. The sound of the newer styles with more access on the neck usually sound in between the old Gibson, deep sound, and a...

    Re: Mandolin Banjo?

Yes they can be brash and loud, but most people put mandolin strings on them. Waaayy to heavy. It is a banjo first and a mandolin second. I use two sets of tenor banjo strings with the heaviest...

Re: Mandolin armrests - Yes, No, Type?

I have them on two and sometimes take them off. I don't really need them. I took them off and played quite a while without them, but this summer in the high humidity, playing outdoors, the varnish...

Re: Gibson A Oval Tuning Machines

You will find that your new tuners also have concave teeth, they are supposed to, that is not wear.

    Re: Mandolin Donation to Veterans

Not to distract from this thread, which is a very worthwhile gesture. Good job Pappyrich. Hopefully more of this can happen.

A couple friends and myself are donating instruments to the library....

I use the 1mm Wegen, but I have a couple that I thinned down and they are all I use. I wish they came thinner.

    Re: Replacing Tuners

The 4 strings should hold it if you are careful. It may move however when you string up the four you have off, so marking is a good idea.

Re: What tools do I need ?

Once you sharpen your chisels to be sharp enough to do this work you can never use them on a door again, or strike them with anything. May want to keep one or two for the doors, haha

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

The thing I like most about the unitune is the long battery life. I have one I use daily many times and it has been over a year with the same battery. They are also accurate and offer strob or...

Re: What tools do I need ?

I have made a bone top for an adjustable mandolin bridge with all the steps for intonation, it would be the same for a non-adjustable one. It's more work, but worth it than simply using a straight...

    Re: Harmonicas & Mandolins

Try and get harmonicas with a plastic comb, not the wooden comb. the wood swells when you play it a lot from moisture and will tear your lips. If you cut it down you need to soak them to keep them...

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

The Polytune is a little more than you need for mandolin as it will check the 6 guitar strings, The Unitune is the same without that aspect and I think works better for the mandolin. I have both and...

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

Good choice Sue, I have several of those. I keep one on each instrument I may travel and play so I won't forget to bring a tuner. They are most accurate on the strob setting. That is also a good...

    Re: Fretboard Frets Question

To answer you question, no. The scale length to the 12th fret will have to stay the same and the frets need to be in the correct place. You can, as others have said, take some out to make it easier...

    Re: Harmonicas & Mandolins

Not all of the time, but most of the time the key of the song is the last chord in the song.

Now to add to what NDO said. First I'll ask a question. Are you going to play straight harp or are you...
  20. Re: Making a bridge setting jig - good idea or not?

Remember when the humidity changes and the top expands or contracts it changes the string height. Changing the string height changes the intonation. So unless the glued on bridge can easily adjust...

Re: Machine tuning - bushings don't fit

What I have done in the past to use tuners that don't fit is cut the tuner plate at the screw mounting holes. The cuts will let the tuner fit your mandolin. The screws will still hold the tuners on...

Re: Multiple guitars but just one mandolin

I have owned a Terz guitar that is tuned a 3rd up, and a friend on mine owns a baritone guitar that is tuned down a 5th. I have to transpose on the fly when I play with him.

bgpete if you go into your bathroom and face the mirror or play into a corner you can get a good representation of what your mandolin sounds like in front of you.
