I started the original thread on Crossrock cases and, at the time, had much to like about them. As my time of ownership has increased things have arisen (regarding the quality and design of the case)...
  3. Re: Article: Crossrock Announces Two New Carbon Fiber Mandolin Ca

I don't believe it does. I think the attraction of carbon fiber as case shell material is the lighter weight. Other than the lighter shell I can't see any significant advancement over Crossrock's...

Is everyone forgetting about the superb TURA cases from Northfield? To my way of thinking the TURA cases... all models... are the best "mid-field" choice in a deluxe mandolin case. Hundreds less than...

    Re: Nashville Visit Advice

I would stay in Franklin or Hendersonville and then do the 25 minute commute into Nashville. Make sure you check out the insanely run Thursday open mike (must get tix in advance!) at Fox & Locke...

    Re: Crossrock Mandolin Cases

    Certainly light in weight...

In that price range I would seriously consider Northfield's Tura case.

Blacktop Big Mon At Dusty Strings

Hey all... I happened to be in Seattle this weekend and, as usual, dropped by Dusty Strings to check out some mandolins. I'll just cut to the chase and say there was one that really stood out to me -...

    Re: Gibson's 1923 F-5 Master Model Reissue

The first Lloyd Loar F5 I ever owned (a Feb.18th with a Virzi) was the cleanest Gibson mandolin I ever owned or bought... and I have owned and bought several in my increasingly longer lifetime. I...

    Re: Monteleones at Rudy’s

Rudy has been in the game a long, long time. Hard to believe that 48th Street, much like 52nd Street, is now just a distant memory... :(

    Re: Monteleones at Rudy’s

I've played this one a bunch... used to belong to a friend in NYC. A stellar instrument in every way... really one the best I've ever played.

    Re: Gibson's 1923 F-5 Master Model Reissue

I believe these Master Models will prove to be very, very good instruments. They will not be 1923 Lloyd Loar F5s however, so don't go in expecting that.

Hopefully they will dial in their Cremona...

Re: Darryl Wolfe selling off stuff

I know Darryl and consider him a friend, admire him and Tom (F5Loar) for their tireless work on the F5 Journal and know for a fact that he knows more about mandolins and related material (new and...

Hey, wait a minute... stop the presses... I just saw that Arnold's has re-opened for lunch on a daily basis! Hallelujah!

Re: Two Stellar Northfields At Dusty Strings

Actually this thread was started by myself regarding two very fine Northfield mandolins that I played at Dusty Strings in Seattle. As far as I know both of these particular models are still produced...

Hi Dave... I did get to try out the Northfield 4th Gen that was at Dusty Strings. I preferred the two-bar Artist model.

Two Stellar Northfields At Dusty Strings

Was down in Seattle last week and made my usual drop-in to Dusty Strings to check out mandolins for my students here in Bellingham. There were two mandolins in particular that I played that really...

    Re: Wide Nut Fever?

    I have noticed a wide-nut trend, an arm-rest trend, a rubber grommet trend, a tone-rite trend, a tone-guard trend, a super-heavy pick trend and a $1,000 case trend.

    Lots of trends! Before you...

    This Baby's Got Back!

I am posting an image here (just for the hell of it) of my all-time favorite Lloyd Loar F5 back. The mandolin in question is a signed, February 8th model done in a gorgeous tobacco finish. To me...

So far as I know Hans Brentrup is no longer making mandolins. John Monteleone has only been doing guitars for many years now... although if you were to toss $30K+ his way he might consider building...
