Re: How long would a job like this take?

Of course a day after posting this I got notification that my mandolin is ready. You all gave some accurate estimates, the job took about 3.5/4 months. Thanks for your replies everyone

How long would a job like this take?

Luthiers of the cafe, if a mando needed the top/soundboard to be replaced, how long would you estimate a job like that to take? We're talking about a carved solid wood top. I don't expect there to be...
  5. Re: Buying an instrument you have never played

I bought a mandolin off reverb and I have mixed feelings about the experience. The price seemed too good to be true for a hand carved instrument, and it was. Whether or not the seller knew about the...

    Re: Upgrading a tailpiece

Those of you who have replaced a tailpiece, what did it cost? Every time I change strings I think about replacing the tailpiece. This is what I've currently got...
  8. Why is this Gibson being called an A-5?

It clearly has an F-style body. The only thing I can think of is the scroll isn't fully cut out and looks flat. Why is this considered an A-5? Or is it just mislabeled?

Best place in Chicago for repairs

My mandolin has some fret buzz just on the E string frets 10-12. Where's the best place in the Chicago for mando repairs? I've been to Hogeye in Evanston, and I like that shop a lot but the buzz...
  11. Re: Going out of the country...personal item/carry-on?

I flew with a washburn M1SDLB in a gig bag earlier this year. It was the maximum length of a carry on and they gave me a little hassle about the size but did let me fly with it.

Haters be damned! Banjo's are rad. Play whatever music you want and naysayers can go kick rocks
  13. A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

I don’t get the point of electric mandolins. They don’t sound like mandolins to me. If I didn’t know someone was playing one I’d just assume I’m hearing an electric guitar. I’d like to hear others...

    V-picks

The ads on the cafe homepage are effective I guess. I can’t bring my self to spend ~$30 on a bluechip but $5-15 I can indulge. Who uses them or has tried them? What models?

  18. Re: Modes - Practicing to Cement Their Sound in Your Head

Idk if this is helpful or not but I've been working on modes lately as well. An exercise I've been doing is to pick a major key and run through all of the scales/modes. So if I start with the G...

    Re: What pick?

I'm also a fan of the dunlop stubby triangle. I find it easy to hold and I like the tone it produces. Local guitar shop sells em for $0.70/each so thats nice too. But if santa is good to me, I may...

    Re: Alvarez A800

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I know I could certainly get a better mando for the money, but like I said I really like the inlay on this one. But not enough to over pay by a couple hundred bucks.
