Turns out her Italian Grandfather bought it new in 1910.
Thank everybody!
The owner asked if I could string it up. Will I damage the top with new strings? Does this kind of mandolin take any special strings? I was planning a light gauge: 9-34 Gauge....
Hey!
A friend of mine has an old (1900's) Antonio Cerrito Bowlback Mandolin. Overall, it looks to be in very good condition, with no cracks or other serious damage.
I haven't seen it in person,...
Side question here. What would a fair price be for a used Kentucky KM-171, Black, Mint, w/gigbag?
On guitar, Vestapol and Spanish refer to the relationships between the strings as opposed to the actual pitch. For instance "Spanish" tuning in G is simply open G (D,G,D,G,B,D) but if each string is...
Does anybody use any alternate tunings on mandolin? On guitar, I use open G (Spanish) and open D (Vestapol) tunings a lot. I know there's nothing stopping me from trying out something like this -...
I've had a lot of experience with Mandolin Brothers on Staten Island and I can say they have an excellent repair shop. I'm sure the others mentioned here are up to the job as well!
If you are close enough to get to Mandolin Brothers on Staten Island, that's the place to go. I used to live about 1/4 mile from them - very dangerous! Now I live in Central New Jersey and still...
I just want to give an update on my dealings with The Mandolin Hut - the outcome turned out to be very positive. Please see my "FINAL UPDATE" post in the following thread:

FINAL UPDATE:
I received the replacement from the Mandolin Hut - the KM-171 (black). On initial inspection, the neck looks nice and straight. The set-up is very good and the action is low and...
The Mandolin Hut seems to be handling the situation extremely well. I spoke with them and explained the issue. They do not have another KM-172 in stock but they do have the KM-171 (black) and...
I'll be contacting the Mandolin Hut today and I'll report how they handle the issue.
I checked the Saga website and under "Specs" it said:
Truss Rod - Traditional Two-Way Adjustable
Yes, I do have a two way truss rod.
I also noticed a hump in the neck where the neck joins the body at the 10th fret. Using a straightedge it rocks a tiny amount at that fret.
I was able...
Looking from the headstock down to the bridge, which way do you turn a truss rod to add relief (forward bow) to a neck? I always get confused on if clockwise adds or removes forward bowing (relief).
Hey Allen, you are right. I did ask for the opinions regarding where to buy from and the overwhelming response was "The Mandolin Store". I would say that I am okay with the purchase, having saved a...
Yup. I took my chances with the Mandolin Hut and as I posted in my other thread, I was less than satisfied with the "set-up". But, a set-up can always be performed. I've been playing guitar for...
Got myself a Kentucky KM-172 A style Oval hole. Overall, very nice. The set-up it came with (supposedly set-up before it was shipped) has a lot to be desired. I'll need to do some tweaking! I did...
Here's a link to the Mandolin Store's KM-172 package deal.
Mandolin Hut is out of stock on the KM-172 but has the KM-171 (black) and the KM-174 (burgundy).
I do not give very high marks to the...
Well, the mandolin arrived yesterday. I let it sit in the box for about 8 hours and then removed the case from the box and let it sit overnight to complete the acclimation to the inside temperature....
I certainly will. I'm expecting delivery today, 01/23, the coldest day of the year so far here in New Jersey (wind chill factor - 3 degrees F), so the box won't be opened up until 01/24!
I'll...
If the nut slots are too low, you might get buzzing - or you may have some high frets. I would also check the neck to make sure it is straight.
I agree! I got the guide and it is excellent. I might be using some of the info on a new Kentucky mandolin that is on its way.
Seems most posts here are in favor of the Mandolin Store, but I think I'll give Mandolin Hut a shot. 70 bucks cheaper, and if I need a set-up when it comes, then so be it... I have a great luthier...
