I'm in the same boat.
Purchased a 91' Flatiron, 5 string Gold Tone E-Mando, Northfield octave, a Recording King parlour guitar, and a ukelele bass.
edit to add the guitar.

Spend a month playing traditional Irish tunes on the mandolin.
I'm a fan of Northfield's website. Very easy to navigate, and is as sleek as their instruments.
I almost bought that one. There was something weird going on with the finish at the bridge that I couldn't stop looking at while playing it. It sounded superb, though.
Elegance. That headstock is the coolest I think I've ever seen. Love the binding too!

The case my Northfield Octave Mandolin came in is super sleek. Same green interior as my Airloom Deluxe case, shiny black exterior, and two internal storage spaces. just extremely elegant overall....
Nice mandolin. It's something you'll just have to get use to. That headstock has a lot more weight to it, causing it to dip. You can keep it pretty stable with your right forearm.
So from the...24 previous responses, you've come to the conclusion that it's either "the bands wishes" or the "audience"? For what it's worth with this huge sample size, they aren't pissing off much...

Been waiting 364 days for this!
Might want to shave the bridge top down so the strings aren't sitting so deep in the slots? You would typically want them sitting halfway into the top. Might be pinching them? Looks pretty cool!
It's obviously one of those Fretless Tone Enhancers.
It will certainly slow this down (my KM-950).

Friction over time will wear through the finish. It may avoid nail damage, but you'd be surprised how fast anything continuously rubbing on a thin finish will wear right through it!

Realized I never posted a photo of mine.
Why would it depend on the brand when he is asking about J74 strings?
Wow I really like the A5 shape! Would love to hear it.
That's pretty inexpensive for an F style. I would rather buy a used KM-1000 at that price point though.
Reading your other post about the head stock break, the short binding near the nut probably occurred with the original head stock break. The short head plate most likely as well. The sanding (or lack...
Put a pick between your pinky and ring finger, this will ensure your hand is in a "fist" position. Make sure the main part of the pick is inside the fist and not outside scratching on the instrument!
More aesthetically pleasing than a broken headstock, for sure!
Indiana (I think? was $90) > Epiphone F5 (the one with the pick-up built onto the pickguard) > Morgan Monroe A Style mahogany.
Those 3 are long gone.

Guess I'll join in the fun. Just compulsively bought the 1N Elderly put up in the classifieds. Always wanted one!
