Re: Has anyone played in Ireland Jam Sessions?

    From that list I'd probably only bother with;

    Donnybrook fair
    Banish misfortune
    Fig for a kiss
    Foxhunter's
Going to the well for water
    Ballydesmond polka
    Toss the feathers
    King of the...

Re: Lyon & Healy mandocello strings?

I like using the Dogal Calace range for mandoloncello.
There are normal & light versions of round-wound & half-round flat-wound and "traditional" (nylon as "gut")...

    Re: Vintange Mandolins in Ireland

As another Irish export my impression is that until the 1990's we were all kind of cobbling along as best we could & acquiring decent instruments normally involved travelling abroad with some very...
  6. Re: 1/4 inch bluetooth transmitter to any speaker?

I use an iRig HD X with a short 1/4" jack from my Eastman ElRey. (stock shots here)

That goes into the iPhone for power and to use the AmpliTube modelling app with the iRig headphone out to...
  7. Re: Amplifiers/pdeals for playing in an electric band

I've been playing about with Amplitube fed from the Ibanez ElRey through an iRig HD X, for home stuff experimenting with sounds, to see what I might translate onto the pedal board.
    I've been using...
  8. Re: strings for a mandocello - conversion of 1919 Gibson L4 to K4

I really like using the Dogal calace half-round mandoloncello strings.
I'm currently using the RW93 set, but will be trying the HR138 set next month (got to plan well ahead with these ones)...

    I think it's more than just the hat, you've got to cultivate the overall look;

  10. Re: British guy here – how should I spend $10,000?

One thing that hasn't popped up here, but which has in several other threads, is the impact of import duties & other constraints on your budget.
As a rough guide your $10k budget will be nearer...
  11. Re: British guy here – how should I spend $10,000?

I got Phil Davidson to make me my dream mandolin. We used some very innovative techniques to get where we wanted.
I reckon he's at the peak of his craftsmanship now & often sources his woods from...

The Kensington Etudes - Chris Acquavells

As many already know Chris Acquavella (via Trekel) published a suite of 30 etudes dedicated to his students. He also released his CD of 10 of them "Recording Of The Dawn" (Bandcamp & all the usual...

    Re: Tremolo...Which player...

I always use Alison Stephens as a reference.
Her broad strokes have an effortlessness that belie the subtle complexity of what she achieves.
This really comes to the fore when she plays duo-style...

    Re: Octave mandolin and mandocello

Just for some added context here are some early 1900s examples with their stats, from the "Bowlbacks of note" thread (running at 7388 posts so it would be cruel & useless just referring people there)...
  16. Re: Just Bought a Grace Designs Alix...Give me Advice!

As far as I can see the Felix shouldn't have any impedance matching issues as it offers so many options. (10MΩ, 1MΩ or 10kΩ for channel 1, and 20MΩ, 1MΩ or 332kΩ for channel 2) not sure what you get...

Re: Tiny adult wants to learn bluegrass!

    Re: Another mic/phantom power question

You'd need 5v for the K&K Meridian mics rather than the 12-48v normally supplied by phantom power inserters.
One easy way to do that is to use the K&K Meridian preamp which they sell as a package....

    Re: String numbering

Highest sounding (highest pitch) to lowest sounding is what is meant & used as the normal convention.
Similarly in singing we use SATB for soprano, alto, tenor, bass.

  23. Re: Electric mandolin interfacing; what approach to take?

    Thanks for the outline Michael.

  24. Electric mandolin interfacing; what approach to take?

I've decided to take the plunge and begin using an electric mandolin with one of the bands I play with.
I'll be keeping it 8 string and if it seems to be working out I might get an electric violin....
