Re: Your favorite mandolin tuning tips?

    Just tune often ;)

I, too, tend to tune the heavier strings first and agree with tuning up to pitch; just seems to get there faster and holds better. I usually use my Strobotune phone app at home....

    Re: Parchment Farm Blues

Michael, I’m near Charlotte, NC. While we do have humidity swings they’re not nearly that drastic. I have a whole house humidifier for winter months and run dehumidifiers in spring/summer months and...

    Re: Hairline Cracks under Fretboard

Agree with those who do this for a living: get it inspected. I bought a new Taylor 714 guitar in 2008 or 2009 that had a similar finish crack I’d missed in the shop. I wanted some additional set up...

    Re: Parchment Farm Blues

Very nicely done, Michael! I really like my RM-1 as well, though I tend to play my more traditional instruments when alone at home. There’s a real tone difference in the quiet of my living room, but...

    Re: Top deflection under saddle?

Agree, post a photo. There are some very talented luthiers on the Cafe who are likely to chime in. IMO, there shouldn’t be top sinkage on a new mandolin, if, in fact, that’s what’s happening. Should...

Re: Best Resources for Chord Sheets?

Sherry, I usually google the song name and add chords or tab to the end. Ultimate guitar, cowboylyrics, and a couple of other free sites pop up near the top. Sometimes the Ultimate Guitar tabs print...

Re: I'm back in the fold after a long hiatus!

Welcome back, and enjoy! There are multiple excellent online resources available now, many of which are free, at least for their beginner info…

    Re: Learning to read Rhythm

There are some much more accomplished musicians posting here than myself, and I 100% endorse their more studious/academic approaches. But, LISTEN, and play along with recordings of songs you want to...

  13. Re: Looking for a tuner that saves my sweetened tunings.

Check out the Peterson Strobotune smartphone app. I’ve not delved into sweetened tunings formally…I get everything close with the tuner and then finalize it by ear most days, though there is the...

Sorry you’re have the hand problems, but congratulations on retirement and best wishes on your next endeavors!!
  15. Re: Now that I have actually tried playing one.. a few questions

Getting clean up the neck can be tough unless you have Thile-esque spindly fingers (not meant to be a criticism, his fingers just fit better than fingers shaped like mine), but you’ll get there with...

    Re: Electric mandolin.

Of those listed would go with Eastman or Godin (especially if you can find one from a Cafe sponsor, ie, well set up). Other considerations include Ovation, Rigel, and Zeta. Ovations aren’t great...
  17. Re: Expanding my searches. Thoughts on USA Ovation mandolins?

It’s been long enough since I’ve played one to comment much on their necks, but I don’t recall them being uncomfortable. The Applause guitar I had (as a cheap plug n play guitar) had a really narrow...

Re: How many Mandolins to own

Revisiting this 10 year old thread was fun. I had to make some choices when I downsized a little over 3 years ago when the youngest went to college. While I didn’t want to get rid of any of them,...
  19. Re: Expanding my searches. Thoughts on USA Ovation mandolins?

Caveat is that I’ve only played a couple through the years, but, if you’re looking for good acoustic tone, they’re not the way to go. If you’re playing in a band with electric guitars, drums, keys,...
  20. Re: F5 Upgrade Guidance - Gibson, Collings, Northfield

Of the three listed I’d most likely choose the Northfield as well. I owned a Collings MT that was a very good mandolin, but I ended up selling it because I preferred the tone of my Silverangel, which...

    Re: Classical mandolin book..easy one?

Depending on how many songs you need you may be able to find enough in the Cafe tab library to get you through the gig. There are also some good Bach for Mandolin books on Mel Bay…

Not sure about present offerings, but I have a recent Reunion Blues F style mandolin bag I bought new from a store in Winston-Salem via Reverb last year. Excellent protection and not as bulky as...

Re: Warped top. How worried should I be about this?

Yes, contact Northfield. From what I’ve seen of them here on the Cafe they seem like good peeps who will take care of you and the mandolin. I’ve only played a couple of Calhouns, but they were good...

    Re: Apollo Mike Marshall picks

It’s TAD 60 and CT 55 for me. I’m going to give the MM some more playing time before passing final judgement, but so far the Bluechips have been clear winners for me, closely followed by Wegen TF...
