Re: The Dewey Murphy Loar Mandolin Project

I didn't have the chance to meet Dewey, but some friends got to play with him and told me about this mandolin. None of them knew who wound up with it though, so it's interesting to see the rest of...

Re: How Many Gibson Mandobasses are there?!

I believe Mike Marshall has stated he has two, one in Germany and one in California
  3. Re: Mike Marshall & Darol Anger show on 2/9/24

Awesome that you got to go in person Sue! I caught the live stream from 2/6 on the Berklee Vimeo and last I heard it was still available here https://vimeo.com/910061358

    Re: Random mandolin sightings

Brooke is a wonderful singer and I know she plays some rhythm guitar, but there are several videos of her chopping mandolin like that from other settings. I know Darin can play mandolin but I am...

I knew that comment was coming as soon as I saw the title...:))
  6. Re: Is "Mr Sun Plays Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Suite" bluegrass

I would put it under the genre of dang good acoustic music that will not get nearly the amount of attention it deserves. But, that may be a bit too long for their character limit. I'd guess serious...
  7. Re: Daddario NBM11540 Nickel Bronze also discontinued

To pile on, Strings and Beyond has let me know that the 11.5-41 heavy gauge Nickel Bronze is now also discontinued. I bought their last 2 sets.

I have a few sets of each to get me by until I can...

    Re: Waverly Tuners tight

I think my last post or two made it clear, but I will say again for the record in case it didn't, that I found in my case the Waverly tuners were fine when not installed.
    It looks like the screw...

Re: Flinner and Walsh in Galway NY

Matt plays banjo on Joe's latest record, very well I think! Tasteful certainly.
Two of my favorite players and teachers!

    Re: Waverly Tuners tight

I did notice that the screw holes on the original set I have are slightly off from the center of the round engravings design.
On the new set, they are centered. That makes the mandolin's screw holes...

    Re: Waverly Tuners tight

    Thanks John.
I put the old set back on and the screw holes line up much better with those than the new set. I think I may just stick with those since I seem to have proven at this point it isn't the...

    Re: Waverly Tuners tight

Update: I received the replacement Waverly tuners today.
Took off the old ones and they turn great....uh oh.
Installed the new ones and they are as bad or worse than the ones I took off.

    I can...

    Re: Humidifier

I run an Aircare 1045 "whole house" humidifier. Here in NC it can keep the house at 40-50% humidity, usually running on level 1 of 4. I refill it at twice a day when the heat is running a good bit....
  14. Re: Should I visit Eastman factory and buy a mando in China?

WOW. Pretty outlandish (and anonymous) statement for your first post.
  15. Re: Learning a Ronnie McCoury solo everyday for the month of Janu

Very nice! That record specifically was a huge influence on me in my earliest days of playing mandolin. Well done.

Re: Is anyone else scared of Bill Monroe?

What a wild ride reading this thread was. Everything from Bill's reputation on and off stage, to AI, to is Wagon Wheel Bluegrass, to Earl Scruggs' banjo technique. :disbelief:

    Re: Waverly Tuners tight

Revisiting this conversation, I had also begun noticing that the same E tuner that was the tightest would have a very loose slop of about a 1/8 of a turn when you backed it off from pitch. The button...

    Re: Consignment Advice

The last two mandolins I sold were through Kevin at Mando Mutt. Being a little over 2 hours down the road, he met me about halfway to pick them up. We picked a starting price and communicated if we...

Thanks for sharing some behind the scenes moments for those of us a bit too far away to visit! Definitely agree that chatting with Adrian is a wonderfully enlightening experience. I was lucky to have...
  22. Re: Northfield Bourgeois Eastman 815-V Head to Head

Just also keep in mind with the Northfields that you can have a choice between Engelmann spruce and red spruce tops. That can make a noticeable difference in the sound. Both great, so it's really...

Re: Clip-on mic vs Removable Pickup

I have a AT Pro-35 that I just used live for the first time last week. It seemed to work well.

I do feel like I need some sort of pedal that I could "boost" volume for solos versus rhythm playing,...

    Re: Waverly Tuners tight

I have a set on one of my Northfields. The E string tuners have been tighter than the others since day 1. Not enough to really be a problem. They came standard on this model and it isn't bad enough...
