    Re: Two Point Mandolin

Just a little tip which might seem obvious but nevertheless worth mentioning. Have a firm grip on your plates when drilling them using your drill press set up, otherwise it's quite easy for the plate...

    Re: Black Walnut

When I first looked at the photo, I wondered whether you owned a cat( or dog), and then you mentioned one. ????

    Re: tenor ukulele question

I've built ukes a while back, and did a fair amount of research at the time. In general, tenors and even concerts will have a bridge patch/plate, but some sopranos do not, depending on who builds...
  5. Re: Stewmac router binding jig - experiences anyone?

I started to read this thread today, not realising I had contributed to it, as it was quite a while back. Anyway, it's still holding up very well and works perfectly. I can't quite remember because I...

    Re: Cloth for varnish

Finishes such as Tru-oil, and probably other oil based ones can be applied with paper shop towels.(typically the blue ones)

    Re: Am i being unreasonable?

I can't believe that bridge! Looks like he's made no effort whatsoever to "fit" it properly. He's not a luthier, maybe a guitar tech who has no experience with archtops. Stay well away.

Re: What's up with that truss rod?

Looking carefully at the enlarged pictures, it appears there are hex lines on the inside of the nut, indicating it is an Allen key/wrench that is required. I would try and remove some of the...

Re: Octave Mandolin nut and bridge spacing

You may find this useful. Scroll down to the diagrams and download the second one. You can then use the spacing for whatever nut or bridge size you choose. It worked well for me....

    Re: Another tru oil question

I've had a similar problem when I used Tru-oil on the edge of rosewood fretboards. The answer was a couple of coats of dewaxed shellac, as previously suggested. I would take note of john-m , and make...

Re: What timber is this please ?

I would too, Marty. It's just that I came across a guitar on google images which had cocobolo and looked very similar with less contrast in the colouring than you might expect.

    Re: OM Sinking Top

Jeremy, have you tried looking on the EagleMusic site. They do Puretone strings which, according to what I've read, are the same as Newtone but branded by Eagle as Puretone. I have no way of...

    Re: Siminoff neck joint snafu

I think if you make the jig Siminoff shows to glue up the neck/body joint, then this will take care of itself. I did exactly as you did and it all worked out ok....

    Re: Octave mandolin finished.

Hi Anglocelt, I'm sorry but it's not for sale . I don't have a website as I'm just a hobby builder who only builds a couple of instruments a year, although I have occasionally sold to friends and...

    Re: Octave mandolin finished.

Yes it is Maurice, I ended up doing a trial string up with a temporary tailpiece, thanks and everything went well. The intonation is not far from perfect.

    Re: Octave mandolin finished.

Thanks, and yes, a lot of thought went into it as I had no plans to follow. In fact there was probably too much thought, as I've forgotten how I arrived at that particular scale length! I think it...

    Octave mandolin finished.

Just completed this build. Thought I'd try something a little different.

I restored and cleaned the head of an old banjo with a "Flash" magic eraser, and it worked like "magic" would you believe.

Re: Octave Mandolin fixed bridge compensation?

As MrMoe has just reminded me of this thread, here's an update. The bridge position (and saddle slot angle determined)has now been located using the trial string up method as suggested above. I had...
  23. Re: Cleaning gunk off a nitrocellulose lacquer finish

Naphtha should be fine. Acetone is the thing to avoid, as it will burn right through nitro.

That's just the kind of answer I was looking for Graham, and round about the figures I was expecting, but now, as the previous contributors have persuaded me to use a trial string up, I'll continue...

Re: Octave Mandolin fixed bridge compensation?

Once again thanks MrMoe, it looks like I will be trying your method after all, so as my body joint is a M&T bolt-on, I have now started to finish the neck and as soon as it's done, I'll install the...
