    Re: Bela at Carnegie Hall

Just got front row seats. Cannot wait.
  2. Re: New Bela Fleck Album out - My Bluegrass Heart

For sure Dan. I can easily see this being like musical Vegemite: you like it or you don’t, not a lot of in between. It is, to me, a bit like listening to “A Love Supreme” or Gould’s interpretation of...

    Re: Apollo Mike Marshall picks

Yes. Mike has been using ProPlecs with all of his instruments…at least on all of his Artistworks classes.
  4. Re: New Bela Fleck Album out - My Bluegrass Heart

I was curious who the “Unknown” mandolinist was on those tracks (I don’t have the cd), he plays some tasty stuff.

This album has me thinking of the first Quintet album: barriers knocked down and...

    Re: Memorizing a song

Sheet music for me. It gives me the framework for the note intervals without restrictions on fretting choices like tab does. I’ve never been able to remember tunes with tab.
  6. Re: New Bela Fleck Album out - My Bluegrass Heart

    This is an astounding album.
  7. Re: BRW Mandolins / Ben Wilcox Magazine Article

Don’t think Ben is still building on a regular basis. I have a BRW 2 point…wonderful fit & finish and excellent tone.

    Sam Bush band

Got to see the Sam Bush band for the first time this past weekend in Georgetown, KY. Man Sammy puts on a show, tons of energy (for a guy that's, I think 69 years old, he brings the heat), he put an...

    Re: Thile Update NYT

Nice to know I’m not the only one with visible fretboard wear in the 20+ fret range.

    Re: Your Wegen Pick

The TF140 is my favorite pick, fits very naturally in my hand. The concave middle area with the holes lies perfectly between my thumb pad and index finger. Also prefer the tone over BC. I wish Wegen...

Re: B Natural by the Lilly brothers

The only “B Natural” song I know of is by Grisman and Ronnie McCoury on the Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza cd.

    Re: Vulfpeck - Thile appearance

It seems the theatrics are part and parcel of Vulfpeck’s schtick...people having fun for fun’s sake...imagine that. Such gall to not treat every piece of music as if it were Barber’s Adagio for...

    Re: Classic Grisman

I love Dawg’s take on “hardcore” bluegrass. Songs like this and albums like Home Is Where The Heart Is, Bluegrass Reunion...awesome stuff. For my money it’s the perfect, if there is such a thing, mix...

    Re: Go Deeper, Not Wider

It’s the same with any hobby...be it (for me) fly fishing, fountain pens or watches...you come across a new interest, learn a lot and buy a lot of new stuff (the Internet is all to happy to help you...

    Re: Resisting the "Iron Maiden"

  20. Re: Why do mandolin players hunch over their instruments?

Well if someone is an internationally renowned musician and educator and is on the front page of the Cafe...and I'm not...then I might ask why that is then ponder the answer.

    And then I might ask...

Re: Chris Thile does Bill Monroe

C'mon now. That break by Bill in the first video is blazing fast and as full of notes as Chris' version...it's no different. If Compton played it like that it'd be hailed as genius rather than the...

    Re: Changing tuners

Just a follow up, and thanks to all the replies: I got a set of Grover 309's from stewmac and it was super easy to install them. The existing screw holes lined up but had to drill 2 new holes on each...

    Changing tuners

Having some issues with the tuners (seem to be Ping/Golden Age) on my BRW 2 pointer and am looking into upgrading. I'm handy with tools but not a luthier by ANY stretch of the imagination.
