    Re: Crossrock Vintage wood case

Just looking at the picture, I don't like the lid padding putting pressure on the bridge. Should be over the neck and tailpiece only.

Re: The pulse of a tune

I tend to think of fiddle bowing shuffle patterns rather than just the hornpipe rhythm/swing. There's a lot of them. The fiddle shuffle really adds the pulse to the tunes. Mike Compton really gets...

    Re: John Goodin passing

Really sad to hear this. John was a wonderful composer and I enjoyed listening to and playing the tunes he wrote. An inspiration. RIP.

    Re: Need help valuing mandolin.

Interesting catalog copy, Jim. The one pictured by the OP has the pickguard screwed into the top like a Shutt, not elevated with a support like the catalog pic and the pic from lenf12. Maybe they...

Re: Is this how it starts?

I love you have it hanging on a nail in the pics. The picture of you holding it tells the whole story. One happy camper. Congrats!

    Re: RIP Arthur Stern

Also a friend of Dawg and a witness to lots of history when Dawg music was forming. A brilliant artist who create some amazing pieces in glass. RIP Arthur.

    Re: Need help valuing mandolin.

The pickguard cutout for the ff hole is Shutt-like as well. A very cool and rare instrument.

    Re: Monroe Mandolin Camp 2021

Shaun, our Heiden jam was epic. So great to hear my Heiden from the listener side and to play your legendary Heiden. You can rip on those Monroe tunes.

Really enjoyed picking with you and George. So much fun.
  13. Re: Focal Point Presents | Mike Compton + Joe Newberry

Mike told me at Monroe Camp about the resurrection of Red by Hugh Hansen. It got a total going over besides the tuners including new frets and setup. He said it came back better than new and he...
  14. Re: Focal Point Presents | Mike Compton + Joe Newberry

Thanks for the video link. Mike played that Model 4 all Monroe Camp last week. An amazing mandolin that held up just fine amidst all the fine F5's.

Re: Do You Baby Your Mandolin?

I heard one of the high-end luthiers describe his owners as players or polishers. I'm a player. I don't abuse my mandolins but I don't baby them. I play them.

    Re: Frank Wakefield

Listen to Frank's breaks on Little Maggie, the first song on the album Glassweb mentioned. Pure Frank genius.

    Re: Frank Wakefield

    Check out Andy Statman.

I went to see Frank one time when I was back East. Nothing like hearing him play that Loar in his kitchen. That thing will hurt you.
  19. Re: Go to guy for top mandolin set up in Nashville area

I heard Hugh Hansen did some work for Mike Compton that Mike was very happy with. Gilchrist recommended him to me back when I owned a Gil, but I never had him work on anything. Not sure where Danny...

  22. Re: Double Stops with Radiused vs. Flat Fretboard

I think the right hand is a tiny bit easier on flat boards with all the strings on the same plane. Left hand prefers a radius.

12-13th fret neck joint seems like an odd choice.
  24. Re: Separation of Soul and Body by Turlough O'Carolan

That's a new O'Carolan tune to me, and a beautiful one played with a great touch, feel, and tone. Thanks for posting. Rather abrupt ending much like the separation of soul and body, I imagine.
