Re: Bowlback Technique: How to hold properly?

That's what I would generally think, but it got me thinking because when I hold my mandolin it looks from my eyes like this: 104510

But, it even seems like the likes of Ugo Orlandi looks at what's...

Re: Bowlback Technique: How to hold properly?

I can't seem to figure this out by looking at the pictures I've seen, due to the angle they are taken at. When you are holding a bowlback, what can you see of the strings and fretboard? Can you see...

Re: Getting back into playing the mandolin

Thank you. I have the 'Traditional Southern Italian Mandolin and Fiddle' book and the other one is on my wish list. I also have Carlo Aonzo's 'Northern Italian & Ticino Region Folk Songs Mandolin'...

Re: Bowlback Technique: How to hold properly?

So can Ugo Orlandi (which is probably where Carlo Aonzo learned it from). I've also noticed that even when he is sitting, Ugo Orlandi holds his mandolin up and not resting on his lap.

Re: Getting back into playing the mandolin

Thanks for the encouragement. I have Marilynn Mair's Complete Mandolinist method book coming and I also have the Calace 6-part method. I certainly hope to get good habits ingrained from the start.

Getting back into playing the mandolin

I stopped playing my mandolin about three years ago when my time and attention were focused more on my career and other sundry projects. But, now I've come back to it. But, so much time has gone by...

    Re: Musical Typesetting Program

If you have a MIDI interface, there are several programs that will do this -- such as Rosegarden that will notate as you play.

    Re: Musical Typesetting Program

Exporting to PDF is trivial once the output is in PostScript. However, to import a PDF and extract the music from it is well outside the scope of this project (and definitely non-trivial) -- it is in...

    Musical Typesetting Program

I am working on a musical typesetting program, similar to Lilypond and ABC. I wanted to know if you were to use such a program, what kind of features and abilities would you expect or want from it?

    Re: 2009 CMSA Convention

Ugh! This is comparably close to me, but I doubt I will be able to attend. :crying:

Are only registered CMSA members allowed to attend or is it open to the public? On a tangental note, what are...

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

Looks more like a G or J to me. Of course, "Gabbricante" or "Jabbricante" makes even less sense.

    Re: Holding a bowlback mandolin

I also note that clothing with very smooth fabric or additives like stain resitants (which is similar, I think, to teflon) make the problem ten times worse.

    Re: Holding a bowlback mandolin

The chamois does greatly improves (read virtually eliminates) the stability issues. I also found that anchoring a finger (e.g., pinky) to the soundboard or resting the palm behind the bridge...

    Re: New Calace Mandolins

I was at the store the other day and they were having a sale on some nice shelf liner -- but the color clashed with my sequin jumpsuit. :))

    Re: Holding a bowlback mandolin

    Thanks for the replies.

It is still a bit awkward (compared to my initial Rogue flatback). But, I think I am starting to get it a little bit. I am getting a chamois cloth since I've heard that...

    Holding a bowlback mandolin

Bear with me as I adjust to my new Calace mandolin (in many regards I feel like its day 1 again). My first question is exactly how should I be holding it?

Should I hold it at my waist or let it...
