That was a fantastic interview. It captured the essence of Bill Monroe. Thanks for sharing.

Re: How is Tuning Drift with Rubner Tuning Machines

I have one mando with Waverly's and another one with Rubner's. Both go out of tune at about the same frequency. The tuners are not the problem. Save your money.

Re: Mandolin browsing in Hudson Valley, NY

Rudy's in Scarsdale has a nice Monteleone. It is about an hour south of the Hudson Valley. Not sure if it would qualify as vintage but it certainly qualifies as good quality.
  7. Re: Mandolin is always a good way to end a video.

Thanks for the tip, Journeybear. I searched the Forum Software Support, and there was a solution but the administrator had to intervene in order to rotate the photo. I'd hate to bother the...

    He is one cool dude.

Sorry about the photo orientation. Not sure how to orient it correctly.

Re: On the Bus with Bill Monroe by Mark Hembree

Finally took the plunge and bought the book. Previous bluegrass books I had read were disappointments, but not this one. The author had to put up with a lot of Monroe's idiosyncrasies and tough work...

  12. Re: Bluegrass or Old Time events in Los Angeles, June 2022?

About an hour south of LA is the Long Beach Dog Park jam on Saturday mornings at 10am, located at 5201 E. 7th St, Long Beach. Also on Saturday mornings at the same time is the jam at Mile Square...

    Re: 4 string mandolin?

Red Valley Mandolins make a 4 string mandolin but the strings are nylon. They sound quite decent, judging by the Youtube videos:

  16. Re: Strap button coming out on my Sam Bush model Gibson

Skip: could you kindly explain why one should not glue the end pin? My end pin recently fell out and I applied a drop of super glue to it before inserting it back in. Thanks.

Re: Is a new mandolin the answer?

I may have a simpler solution to your problem. Try experimenting with different picks of different materials and thicknesses before investing in expensive equipment. You may find some picks produce...

Re: Let's talk small, high-end, acoustic amps

I only have experience with the Schertler amp. Customer service was not great, maybe because they are located in Europe. I tried contacting them to get replacement parts but never got a response. ...
  19. Re: bluegrass listening to understand and learn the mandolin

Pier: welcome to the mandolin cafe forum. Youtube is your friend. Lots of free lessons and bluegrass performances. As a guitar player, I suspect you'll pick it up quickly.
  20. Re: I have an open mike on Saturday and I'm scared to death

As opposed to the majority opinion here, I say don't do it. You won't be ready in 4 days. What's the rush? Why torture yourself over this? Delay your open mic performance until you know the song...

Just be aware that the Bose S1 and Fishman Mini Loudbox don't have phantom power if you plan to use a condenser mic for the vocals. Other than that I like both amps for a small outdoor setting, but...

Re: Where are all the (new) mandolins?

We just went through the holiday season. Even in a normal non-covid year, inventories in stores would be depleted by Christmas. Ask any musical instrument retailer and that's what they'll tell you.
