    Re: Mandocello as an octave?

My custom 10 string 26" scale mandocello covers the range of a mandocello and an OM , going from C to E (C-G-D-A-E).

I also tuned my Eastman MDC805 like an OM once:

Re: 14” octave string set questions

IMO you can't completely separate music, or at least rhythm, from math. Also fret placement, string tension, intervals, harmonics, etc. are all derived mathematically.

Same material as ideal bearings (frictionless), ideal heat engines (maximum Carnot efficiency - 40%) and ideal 100% efficient inverter electronic components.

Re: 14” octave string set questions

Yes you're definitely missing something. There's a reason you don't find octave mandolin string sets for a mandolin scale - wrong application! It's like looking for cello strings for a violin!

    Re: Broken Tuner Key

Looks like just a broken tuning machine button. Easy fix. I've done it with epoxy. You can also hopefully get a replacement button if you like - AFAIK Eastman uses Pingwell (aka Ping) tuning...

Re: Learning mandolin as a fiddler?

Yes. I started on violin when I was 10, classically trained, and played in orchestra all through the end of high school.

I started learning bluegrass and fiddle tunes when I was 13, based on the...

Re: Did My Own Speed Neck

I did my first speed neck the same way. The clear finish was flaking off the neck on my Morris hybrid F4. I used a pick to scrape the rest off, then used some 400 grit sandpaper to smooth it all...

    Re: Mandobird pickup replacement ideas

I got a Mandobird VIII many years ago. I also couldn't get the intonation right, so I replaced the bridge with a Moongazer. Unfortunately Tom passed away later and I don't know if they're still...

    Re: Wintergrass Jam 2/22 - 2/25

Where are the mandolincafe folks? I'm usually roving the halls or hanging out in the WAMA suite.
  12. Re: Going out of tune upwards... Explain this to me, please!

Changes in relative humidity can cause this as well as temperature. As the instrument absorbs moisture, the neck and body expand, causing strings to go sharp.

    Re: Newbee with Tuner Question

AFAIK Eastman uses Pingwell (aka "Ping") tuning machines on all their instruments. I've changed out tuning machines on a number of guitars and mandolins. In most cases the replacements don't just...

Re: To Speed Neck or Not to Speed Neck

I grew up playing violin. All orchestral stringed instruments have speed necks. It's what I'm used to.

When I started acoustic guitar and electric bass I could tell it was different but figured...

    Re: Ten String Bandolim tailpieces?

Allen makes cast 10 string tailpieces. I have one on my 10 string mandola and 10 string mandocello.

Don't know if it will fit your bandolim.

Re: 12 string tuned like mandolin?

Before adding the capo, you'd have something like my 25-1/2" scale 10 string mandocello tuned C-G-D-A-E. I have octave pairs on the C, G and D strings. Although not as common as guitar or mandolin,...
