  4. Re: F5 Upgrade Guidance - Gibson, Collings, Northfield

Hey, I did this very thing! I upgraded from my KM-1050 to a Collings MF Deluxe.

Everyone's ear is different, so you may enjoy a certain sound more and that's where playing them comes in. I played...

    Re: Clown Barf Construction

I'll admit that I really like the clown barf picks now and they've begun to be my mainstay. I own Apollos, BCs, etc, too. Something about the similarity of tone to the others and the fact that...
  6. Re: Difficulty finding Elixir Nanoweb coated strings

I've found whatever the "Appalachian Moonshine" coating is on the Mapes to be really nice. They last forever for me, and I usually corrode strings quickly. Might check them out.

    Re: String woes

I'll also add that I recently went 11.5, 16, 26, 40 and it's amazing. I love the feel. I also love my Mapes.

    Re: New Chris Thile album

I listened to it all the way through. I absolutely love a lot of his other stuff, but this is too out there for me.

It was similar to watching an art film to me. It only seems to make sense to me...
  10. Re: Need Help with String Choice for Sweaty Hands

I can add a +1 to this. I go through strings quickly and Mapes have been long lasting, sound great, and it's amazing that I can get a custom set for $6/set.

    Re: Question about Collings mandolins

There's a lot of personal taste that will occur here. Make sure they have a good return policy or try out period.

I bought a new MF Deluxe late last year and I absolutely love it. I upgraded from...

Re: Question for Thomastik strings users

    Just looked around...flatwounds? Ya'll are nuts. :)
I'm just going to ask the dumb question...do they sound like flatwounds? Seems like it'd be a very much subdued sound for any bluegrass playing.

    Re: Bright tuners

Just bought one. I've been having the same issue with the brightness of the D'Addario ones. I love how small they are, but in any outside light, they vanish. Can't wait to get my TC UniTune.

Re: Pick Noise, pointy vs rounded, etc.

I started with the CT-55 and have slowly gotten rounder and rounder. Now I'm using the E shape from Apollo Picks (similar to the SR from BC).
I also like the new rounded Clown Barf ones from Golden...

Breaking with the thread, YEP. I don't name them all, but some I do. My Collings is named, "Tex." (Pretty obvious as to why).

    Re: Wide neck Mandolins ?

FWIW, when I came over to mandolin from guitar, I got a Kentucky KM-1050 with a 1 1/8" nut. Dennis at the Mandolin Store said I'd find the width helpful for the transition. It definitely helped. Not...
