  1. Re: Is a January 87 Carlson signed Flatiron considered "Pre-Gibso

According to Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars, Gibson "acquired the Flatiron mandolin company in May, 1987."

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

I'm laughing at the North Carolina "boutique" shop that's listing a nine year old standard issue Martin D-18 for $175 more than a new one costs.
Bet they'll sell it, though, to an unsuspecting...

    Re: 1912 Gibson A

Sounds like you got a good one.
A lot of records were made on the old oval hole Gibsons.

    I usually string these instruments with 10 or 10 1/2 - 14 - 24 - 38 or 40. I go back and forth between...

    Re: Unsigned Loar on Reveb

I have no illusions about what goes on in factories. I've worked in several of them.

The only reason I get picky is because many buyers believe in the unicorns, elves, and fairy dust; and I might...

Re: 1920ish Martin built? For S.S. Stewart

You will have to measure the scale length. Most, but not all bowlbacks will have a scale length of 13". You will have to make sure, though.

Measure the distance between the end of the...

    Re: Unsigned Loar on Reveb

Well, just like any other used instrument, it's what a buyer and a seller can agree upon in a finite moment of time.

Since I've had some experience buying and selling older instruments over the...

Re: Is It Possible to Fake It?

Jazz musicians "fake it" all the time. That's one reason that the collections of lead sheets with chords are called "fake books," giving players just enough information to "fake" their way through a...
  8. Re: 1903 postacard showing how to not play a mandolin

Yeah, but it was only a couple. They're still laughing.
  9. Re: 1903 postacard showing how to not play a mandolin

All the women on this forum are laughing at the men, because they're blind and just don't get it . . .

    She absolutely adores her mandolin.

    Re: Struggling with Eastman V-neck

If the mandolin is uncomfortable to your hands, the choices are pretty clear. Either sell the instrument or take a chance that just softening the V will be enough to make it comfortable. Eastman...

    Re: Finish issues

It sounds like cleaning the ebony with lacquer finish might have solved your problem.

Lifting finish from tuner bushings is a common problem. I've seen it on loads of modern Gibson and Martin...

    Re: Finish issues

Finishing is not my strong suit, but I'll mention that probably 50% of finishing problems are due to not waiting long enough between steps. And it probably doesn't hurt to double the drying time...

    Re: Vintage Gibson Pickguard Observations

Anything round and stiff will work for the washer in the bridge. I usually just shove a thick piece of weather-stripping felt in there, poke a hole in it, and give it a "haircut."

Re: F4 Headstock veneers - ebony?

At least through the early to mid 1920's, they are a dyed mystery wood, often called "dyed pearwood," which is a misnomer. They may have overcoated the whole thing with some sort of black varnish...
  15. Re: Bill Monroe talks about his Lloyd Loar in an interview

In 1985, Loar mandolins where not anywhere near that expensive. I don't remember the exact price, but I would guess somewhere between $5K and $8K. As a comparison, Martin D-45's were $10K or less,...

  17. Re: 1935/36 Wards Fall/Winter Catalog Gibson made mandolins

If you got 250 bucks for a Carson Robison in the '80's, you did pretty well.
You could buy an L-00 with the Gibson logo for $500 - $600 through most of the 1990's. Or, for the same amount, a model...
  18. Re: 1935/36 Wards Fall/Winter Catalog Gibson made mandolins

    Thanks for posting this.

It is important to clarify that of the string instruments on these pages, only the model 1610 and 1607 mandolins, the model 1586 banjo, the model 1201 and 1204 Carson...

I just replaced the very good quality but non-original adjustable bridge on a 1911 F-4 with a replica "one-piece" [with removeable saddles] bridge, and was very pleased with the results.

I share the same point of view.
The way I look at it, any attempt to assign value to a characteristic that does not exist is plain old-fashioned market manipulation.

    Re: Unsigned Loar on Reveb

Yes, that's the way the term is supposed to be used. The people who coined the term are assuming that these instruments would have been signed if Loar had been there.

My questions are 1] "How do...
