    Re: Love for Ovals

I prefer the tone of oval holes based on the Gibson A-2 design over modern f-mandolins.
I don’t think the hybrid Oval holes I've played with a 15 fret neck sound as good.

Re: Kissimmee Fl mandolin hire or borrow

I almost always fly in US and Europe with a mandolin.
Most often in the overhead, a few times (traveling for work) in a big suitcase.
    Never had any issues.

    Re: arthritis

I saw an arthritis doc for my thumb a few years ago. He said there was nothing to be done medically, so I take a Tylenol before I play which raises my pain tolerance. I asked a sports doc neighbor...

Re: Oasis Case humidifiers no good?

I use the Oasis and think they are great. The humidity in my case when closed is ~47% rh when measured with an accurate Bluetooth humidity sensor. I leave my mandolins cased in winter when not...

    Re: Oval hole mandolin recommendations

I have an Eastman 504 which sounds very good. I think it’s modelled after the 1920’s Gibson A2. I prefer the 5-10 year old Eastman versions, since I recently bought and returned a new Eastman 604,...
  8. Re: Tell me your experiences with rechargeable tuners

Rechargeable batteries don’t matter if I can’t read the display in sunlight. I’m also a big fan of the Unitune. Which of the rechargeable units have very bright displays that are visible outdoors...

    Re: Played my first gig

Congrats, enjoy the journey. On one of my first open mics (~5 years ago), I’m playing with a guitar player. I have my song printed on a sheet in front of me. I start playing and singing my first...

Re: Thoughts on a 2005 Eastman

I had a 2004 Breedlove Quartz, and now have a 2014 Eastman 505. This year I considered switching back to the Breedlove, but ended up keeping the Eastman, because it was not worth the effort to switch...
  11. Re: Best Mandolin for Traveling From Sea Level to High Desert?

Keep your mandolin in a good humidified case when not in use and the Eastman should be fine. I take my mandolin from 25% indoor to 70% rh (& back) when flying cross county without a problem. In...

    Re: Wireless mandolin connection

The Xvive U2 specifies the latency as 6ms which should not be detectable. I would expect there to be noticeable (~50ms) latency if I was standing 50 feet way from my band and listening to both the...

Re: Sell THE LOAR and get an f hole flatiron

My 1980’s Flatiron had great tone, but I sold it because I didn’t like the neck profile. I think a 2 day trial to look at all aspects of playing is important before deciding on the purchase.

    Re: Wireless mandolin connection

Thanks for the comments. Before trying the Xvive I would plug my cable directly into the sound system and could adjust the tone to be ok. With the Xvive I need to use the Pure Preamp to get rid of...

    Wireless mandolin connection

I got a Xvive U2 wireless audio connection for my mandolin. I primarily want to use it for gig sound checks or for moving into the audience if needed for sound adjustments between sets. Use a K&K...
  16. Re: Finely controlling humidity seems to be a "must", but I wonde

My old house in Wisconsin only tolerates mid 20% RH when it’s very cold outside. I use Oasis in-case humidifiers, which hold the case RH to about 45% when measured with a wireless humidity sensor. ...

    Re: Eastman 305 string preference?

After reading this thread, I decided to try a set of flatwound EFW74 on my MD505. My 1st observations are: harder to install since the strings don’t bend as easily, don’t seem to stretch much, ...

Re: Ready to upgrade mandolin - need advice!

I have a 5 year old MD505 that I bought new, and later installed a K&K pickup. I’d suggest you have a 2 day trial on any mandolin you purchase. I think both tone and playability (neck profile,...

Re: Ready to upgrade mandolin - need advice!

I have a Collings and and an 505 A Style Eastman. I think with a buyers trial, Eastman’s new or used are very good value for the money. You can get one used, install a K&K pickup for $200 and stay...

Re: What's the best room/apt humidifier?

In winter I humidify my cases, which keep my mandolins between a happy 45% -50% rh. They are often cased when then not being played. I have whole house humidification, but live in an old house in...
