    Re: Struggling with Eastman V-neck

I was playing with friends today for another friend who was paralyzed a few years ago. We play for him every Tuesday and are starting to come back now that we are all vaccinated, especially him....
  2. Re: Is The Note On The 5th Fret Of Your Mando’s “A” String a “D”?

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned. If you have tall frets and press harder with one finger (the one that frets the 5th fret for instance) you could easily press too hard and cause that note to...

    Re: Struggling with Eastman V-neck

No, a speed neck simply has the finish removed, or not put on in the first place. It is sealed or oiled, but not finished so your hand doesn't stick.

Re: Ferrules for a Kalamazoo KM-11

You could also saw one of the stumac that are too big. Use a jewelers saw and cut one fine cut thru the ferrule, hopefully it should then crimp and be small enough to fit. Put the cut on the top away...

    Re: Struggling with Eastman V-neck

I have both V and C necks and like them both. You should not be putting your thumb on the point of the V, it's not a guitar. Thumb should be placed on the G side flat of the V. No need to grip hard...

    Re: Dr. Arm for Mandolin

I use them. Had them on for a while then took them off. One of my mandolins was uncomfortable where my arm went across it so I put it back on. The other developed a blush in the finish, when playing...

    Re: Boomerang Banjo Mandolin

When you get strings don't put heavy mandolin strings on it, it is a banjo after all. Banjos don't have heavy strings. I use two sets of tenor banjo strings 10-28.

Re: How high do you go

There are a few tunes that I like to add some color and play the melody in 3 or 4 different places on the neck. In those instances I will go to the 15th fret.

    Re: Cleaning a fretboard

I like a 3M scotch bright pad, the white one. It is quite fine and will polish the frets and clean the fingerboard. If it hasn't been done in a year or two I use fingerboard oil sparingly.

    Re: Eastwood Mandocaster Bridge Peoples...

My electric mando has only two saddles. Only 4 strings, but two on a saddle. To get them to intonate I set it correct for one string, then filed a round notch to move the next string back until it...

Re: Strings with no loop & no ball

The technique for classical is similar to a clove hitch. The bind on the string/rope keeps is from slipping. The more tension the more pressure to keep it from slipping.

    Re: Eastwood Mandocaster Bridge Peoples...

Poor design and drilling one hole instead of two. That's all I can think of.

Re: Strings with no loop & no ball

You could tie a bowline, it would give you a loop that won't slip.

    Re: A very water-damaged bowlback

Floods have a lot of mud, muck and slimy grime. It would be a ton of work and not sure anything would stay glued after sucking all that into the wood.

    Re: Dull and Lifeless

Yes CB you are right and the first thing I would check in that case is intonation. The bridge may have moved slightly, or the action changed because of weather changes.

    Re: A very water-damaged bowlback

I sometimes get sucked into projects to get something playable again. Not even beginning to considering that one.

    Re: Dull and Lifeless

I agree with rcc56. Before you waste a set of strings, or try many different things that could let something that might be happening get worse, I would have it looked at. I recently refit the bridge...

Re: New carbon fiber mandolin builder

Re: New carbon fiber mandolin builder

I play an often hot, humid, boat cruise in the summer here. I would love a carbon fiber mandolin for those gigs. I could take a Rouge, but wouldn't be happy doing it. Tried leaving a cheap mandolin...

Re: A new Art Deco inspired mandolin

Graham, a true functioning work of art. It would be hard to put this in a case and not be able to look at it. Maybe have to play in front of a mirror for a while just to see it while you play. Really...

Re: Worm under, Worm over? A visual guide.

Re: Is this a serious concern?

How does it play? If it plays all right I wouldn't worry much. The old ones, as Jim says and shows, had the dowel on the neck. I would think yours being a metal one would too. You would have to take...
