Re: post a video of yourself

This is a piece from a collection I'm working on that is inspired by the Great Plains. The instrument is a Kimble 2-point mandola.

  2. Re: What price level and up gets you a "lifelong keeper" mandolin

Just to add a slight tweak to a lot of what has been said here, having a "lifelong keeper" has less to do with price or build quality or anything else than it has to do with curbing wanderlust. If...

Bourree #1 from Bach Cello Suite #3

Been working on this for a few weeks and have hit the point of diminishing returns, so I decided to set up a mic and close the books on it. The instrument is a Northfield 5-Bar Artist (Engelmann).

    Excellent.
  6. Re: Banjo Ben Clark store, lessons and Eastman 515V

I've bought several accessories from BB and they seem to get to my house about 10 minutes after I've ordered them.

Re: Powerful A models in the 5K range

Another vote for Kimble. They are very well suited for what you're wanting.

Re: Gibson A2Z refret with larger frets??

One of my friends who is a long-time vintage dealer refers to these people as the ICP (I Can't Play) types. He doesn't have a lot of patience with them.

I have gotten to where I value playability...

    Incoming Waterloos at TNAG

Noticed today that apparently there are a couple of Waterloo mandolins pending at The North American Guitar (formerly Cotten Music). No affiliation (other than Kim being a very good friend of mine)....

    Re: Peace by Sarah Jarosz

Quick follow-up ... I noticed today while watching Sarah's performance that in measures 19 and 51 she doesn't keep the 2nd fret barre and use the 2nd string, 7th fret to get the E. She actually lifts...

Re: Sarah Jarosz on Austin City Limits

I saw her 7-8 years ago at Gruene Hall (in between San Antonio and Austin, mostly standing room, bar at the back, a few chairs and benches around the edges). Definitely a highlight.

    Re: Peace by Sarah Jarosz

    Glad to hear it!

I've almost got it smooth enough to record at this point, but it'll be a couple of weeks because I'm leaving town for a bit fairly soon.

    Re: New Chris Thile album

The Bach recordings and the collaborations with Marshall, Ma, Meyer, etc., are a lot more appealing to me. But I continue to support Thile's efforts with my dollar because I think he deserves it.

    Re: Peace by Sarah Jarosz

I think that's just the software's way of denoting a half note in the tab. I primarily read standard notation, so I didn't pay any attention to that (but I didn't intentionally add tremolo or vibrato...
  15. Re: What song, Album, Musician changed your perspective on music?

    Kate Rusby.

    Hard stop.

I was in a shop in Tucson in 1998, heard a voice that I really liked, asked the shop owner who it was, and he absent-mindedly pointed to a CD on the "now playing" stand....

    Re: Peace by Sarah Jarosz

Glad to help, Eric. My notation may not always be standard (sort of a hybrid of piano notation and what "looks right" to me), but again if you're familiar with the piece the ornamentation and such...

    Re: Peace by Sarah Jarosz

I just started using MuseScore 3. It's free and very user-friendly. I've not yet figured out how to score certain notes being held while other notes are being played (for example, the droning low G),...

    Re: Peace by Sarah Jarosz

I was listening to this song today and decided to do a full transcription in both standard notation (which I find easier to read) and tab. The recorded versions differ (minorly) in different spots,...

I use a standard treble clef when I am transcribing things for mandola, so I guess the short answer is that it depends on what is easiest for you. Piano was my first instrument and I have a really...

I never understand the appeal of recording something in a home studio (or wherever) and then faking a live performance of it. If you're going to record it in studio, with all of the punch-ins, etc.,...

    Re: Kimble two point reviews?

    Re: Straps for Vintage Mandolins

Hey guys, thanks much. I'll check that thread. And I completely agree that simple // basic leather is better on vintage stuff.
