Re: Tom Ellis on the news!

The same news group contacted me as they wanted to personally hear the best F5 that Tom has produced LOL

Great story on a great builder and a great person.
  3. Re: Tell me how to play like Adam Steffey in 5 easy lessons...

I agree entirely to learning your own style and methods...... maybe stealing some licks and methods but not trying
to copy who someone else is. Many of today's players are very stuck on Steffey or...

Re: Lots of Ellis Mandolins for sale

I got to meet with Tom back in the summer at the NAMM show. He said that he was producing about 12 mandolins
a year at this time. These mandolins sit at a price point almost in a category of...
  5. Re: have you ever used "for my retirement" as a reason to buy a m

Nope, but I used money in my retirement fund to buy one and later paid it back :)

Re: Some more Ellis vs Red Diamond F Questions

Dennis at the Mandolin store sells his Ellis mandolins with a Calton as well for the 11.5 price listed above.
I believe he has one coming soon into his shop.

    Re: New Ellis F5

Well, I will play as nice as I can and say that the sound and playability for me were just not there. I'm not Steffey nor Thile by any means but I have been playing for 30 years and I just couldn't...

    Re: New Ellis F5

I must say that I went thru the same scenario with a RSDMM and an Ellis F.. Sold the Ellis to get the RSDMM and like you said "something was missing".....Long story short I am glad to have an Ellis...

    Re: New Ellis F5 Pics

Great looking Mandolin....That back is beautiful I must say ! The case that came with it compliments the mandolin
very well also, That's almost Loar looking and the hardware looks really beefy...
  10. Re: Who are builders who, consistently, build clean F5s?

What is so good for all of us is that this list has grown over the years.

I still sit and look at my Ellis when I am noodling around at home and think "how in the heck does Tom build such a...

    Re: Gilchrist Mandolins

I agree in that there are several examples of the $10-$14K club being just as good as the Gils and the Dudes. I have A/B'd the Ellis and Master Models against them both and quality, feel and sound...
  14. Re: Would You Rather Have One Gibson Lloyd Loar Or....?

Hey Bernie, I don't think I know you as I play with a band from Brookville Indiana. You might be thing of Brad Meinerding who hangs around the Comet Allstars down in Cincy ?
  15. Re: Would You Rather Have One Gibson Lloyd Loar Or....?

as far as spending some cash I would buy one of The new MM's that David and the crew are making at Gibson and never look back. LL's are way cool but I have yet to see one that sounds $200+K good....

Re: Noam and other winners at IBMA

I think AS is the most influential mandolin player in my lifetime and such a nice guy that talks to every fan that comes along. What an ambassador for our music, we couldn't as for any better.

Re: New 'used' Ellis "A" style has arrived.

Welcome to the Ellis Clan ! I have had an A and now own a F and to be honest they both are equally amazing.
The A maybe had a little bit of sweetness especially on slower single note stuff. As far...

    Re: New Ellis F5 Ordered

Ellis mandolins are great instruments. I let one go 3 years ago and it was always the "one that got away". I was lucky enough to just get a new one and it's a gem. I love Toms new flowerpot inlay...

  21. Re: Gibson *enter mandolinist here* model--opinions?

In that range a Collings MT2V or an Ellis A model would be a great choice. If you are stuck on a
F model then the F5G's that are being made by Gibson right now are just killer mandolins and ...
