    Re: Carolan's Draught

A lot of people will tell you that the tremolo does not work in Irish trad. I'm not so sure, but definitely, it is not required.

Re: 1987 Flatiron Artist A5 (Mint)

If it is my former mandolin, the neck has been replaced. Flatiron replaced it under their lifetime warranty.

    Re: Memorizing a song

That's pretty common, and especially on these fiddle tunes that are all so similar. The key is...repetition. I think, and this is probably not news, playing a tune you're learning a veeeerrry slowly,...

    Re: String shortage!?

Elixir mandolin strings are still not available. I have pretty much settled on those strings, so it figures that they are unobtainable. XS strings are...OK.

So i noticed that some of their other...

I love this, and probably everyone who reads this sub forum knows the tune, but just in case! Andy Statman, and really good guitar by John Carlini. I don't know who are playing bass and brushes, but...

Re: Where to play melody on fret board

And even if it's in the same octave, playing up the neck has a different sound. On my mandolin it's a little mellower. It depends on what you want to hear. Open strings sound a little different from...
  10. Re: Mandolin playing mindset vs guitar playing mindset

Judging from my own experience, you might one day regret having used that left hand technique on mandolin. I play a little guitar, bass guitar, and double bass and on all of those place my thumb...

Re: Lyon and Healy frets: For the record

That was mine, the Style C. It turned out great! He planed the board, replaced the tiny originals with modern frets, did a fingerboard extension scoop that is invisible, and cut and fit a nice...

Re: Strings for sore finger tips

Definitely get your setup checked. We can't see the instrument so it's hard to advise, but a good setup is especially important for a beginner. Learning to play is challenging enough with a good...

    Re: Reasons to avoid practicing

I know the thread is intended to be something to giggle about, but I love practicing. It's so hard to find time to do it, but I would play 8 hours every day if I could. More!

Finally! This album introduced me to many things, including the mandolin itself, and all those marvelous musicians. Still a favorite.
  17. Re: Tips on getting more volume out of a 3 week old Mando?

It won't, but I would love to try that just to see my wife's expression when I explain the process.

    Re: Yank and Sleepy

You know the story of Doc Watson's discovery? He was playing functional music for square dances on a Les Paul, and Ralph Rinzler told him to put it up and never play it again. The BIG audiences were...

    Re: B7b9

Anytime I see a 7b9 chord I'm thinking dominant chord of a minor 2/5, and pretty much just play it as a diminished chord and ignore the root. Unless I'm playing bass. I'm sure it's used in other...

    Re: Whaat is this chord?

I think the only context is that he just likes the sound of the chord, moving from that Dm. So we can name it whatever but there is a bit of sweetness to be heard moving from Dm to Dmb6. The most...

Re: Some Real Music - Sierra Ferrell

She was a fixture on the street in the French Quarter for several years, but that's not what this is. Some of the French quarter stuff is R rated.
