    Re: Singing and playing.

My singing IS really uninspired and boring at best.

I don't know if we are talking strumming, chopping or picking? (fairly easy, harder, hardest)
    It takes lot's of practice.

    No matter what...

Re: Whiskey Before Breakfast - tutorial

    Good work.

It has also been covered in the song a week group here:
    http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/group.php?do=discuss&discussionid=1569
It was also the tune that started that group.

    Re: Bluegrass or not?

I do find it interesting that bluegrass is often not even a category. I put my band on reverbnation and had to pick the folk category. I also like the rock I grew up with versus the stuff they play...
  7. Re: Work in progress... feedback welcome on first incomplete cut.

In bluegrass there will often be a chorus which will change so each of those verses would be separated with a different pattern.

    This song comes to mind:
    [G]When I was young and in my [D]prime, ...
  8. Re: Work in progress... feedback welcome on first incomplete cut.

First let me qualify this by saying that I am not a good song writer, never took a poetry class and did not excel in english composition.

(For me) the double rhyming lines are a bit monotonous.

My feeling is that bluegrass is a big tent and everyone is welcome. Do we really need to distinguish between bluegrass, newgrass, rockgrass, etc...? (I suppose those sorts of labels do help...

This subject was touched on in the BG forum. There is no easy answer. My wife can generally pick up tunes on the fly but that is a skill that takes a long time to develop. I have to work out a...
  11. Re: need a little help with a mandolin break for banjo tunes

I agree with above if you...

Re: Beginner Chord Help - A and D

I usually just leave off the seven in the 7523 G often early on I used the xx23. With practice I am getting better at covering the seven but it is a pretty good stretch. In the key of G x523 -C...
  14. Re: need a little help with a mandolin break for banjo tunes

I am a proponent of learning to play by ear. With practice this really expands the ability to pick up tunes. Also it is OK to simplify a tune so that if Cripple Creek in A gives you trouble than just...
