What are some other names that your mandolins have inherited? Or is that normal?

I am still trying to figure out this posting thing… but I have been fiddling with a cheap as they come mandolin for the past semester (one that the first fret was half the size it should be) and now...

So for the sake of not sounding like a person that doesn't know what they are talking about, I have a disclaimer- I am new to this.

However, does any one have any advice that they wish they knew...
