    Re: Church Praise Band Question

If it were me (and I don't go to church so take this for what it's worth), I wouldn't send a note like that. The music leader probably has enough on his plate, and you might not want to make him...
  2. Re: Billy Strings and Christopher Henry - Midnight on the Stormy

Nice! I like how Billy incorporated some of Bill’s original banter (someone always trying to tune a banjo) into the introduction.
  3. Re: Jam Etiquette / Rules Question - Should songs be banned

Wagon Wheel I can't remember the last time someone called it at a jam, but I've played it for gigs a lot. Turkey in the Straw maybe once or twice at an old time jam, once at someone's house. Probably...
  4. Re: Jam Etiquette / Rules Question - Should songs be banned

I've never encountered a song ban at a jam before. Wagon Wheel just doesn't get called much around here. I'm not sure that would be the one I would ban, as it has a straightforward chord progression...
  5. Re: Mandolins are 2-3x more than equivelent guitars?

You can buy a US-made A-style, F-hole mandolin--Flatirons, Gibson A9s--for about the same price as a used D-18 (around $2K) or less. I paid less for a Nashville Flatiron A than I have for all but one...
  6. Re: $4k (or hopefully less) Bluegrass Mandolin Search

Don't know if this BRW has been listed before but I would be interested if I had the dough: https://www.mandolincafe.com/ads/211307#211307

If I'm not mistaken, an earlier version of the ad had language to the effect of, people have been contacting us to disparage this instrument [though probably really the high asking price for an...

Re: Flatiron Festival F in Classifieds...

If I'm not mistaken, an earlier version of the ad did allude to the fact that it's an import, but that language is no longer there.

I'm wondering if the shop was deceived when they acquired it,...

Re: Cole's One Thousand Fiddle Tunes in pdf?

I would guess that since Cole's was first published in 1940 (even though it's essentially an appropriation of Ryan's, a public domain work), it wouldn't be public domain yet, hence the lack of online...

Re: Cole's One Thousand Fiddle Tunes in pdf?

    I don't think I've seen a pdf of Coles.

I have the Mel Bay reprint of Ryan's and much prefer the pdf scan of the original. The portrait orientation of Coles/1000 Fiddle Tunes/Mel Bay makes the...

I think one of the Whites is a good guess. JD was playing with them around this time.

Re: 30 tunes you should know!

If we're considering jam repertoire, Whiskey Before Breakfast and Gold Rush are two of the obvious omissions.

The last few I've never heard called at a jam.

I think the best jam tunes are the...

    Re: Bluegrass Jam…just kidding.

I mean, no, not for me. I like a lot of Taylor and Beyonce's music.

It's just that if you want to do a T-Swizzle song at a bluegrass jam, you'll have more success if you know how bluegrass...

    Re: Bluegrass Jam…just kidding.

I know lots of musicians, primarily guitarists, that are more technically skilled than the local bluegrassers, but they don't know (and haven't made any effort to learn) the most basic...

    Re: Bluegrass Jam…just kidding.

The way I see it, there are types of music that are dominant in some (Baby Boomer to Gen X, Caucasian) cultures, that are almost in the air so to speak: Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, "Take...

Re: USA-made budget mandos, who's who?

The Nashville-era Flatirons (1998-2001?) are usually affordable when they show up for sale. One A-style sold for $1,300 on eBay last month. If I remember correctly, Gryphon even had one F-style for...

    Re: Magic marker on top

It didn't even occur to me that the seller might think the signatures increase the value.
  22. Poll: Re: Just starting out -- Should I really learn to "read music"?

And to build on what CarlM wrote above, the Mel Bay Complete Mandolin Method is standard notation-only, and starts in a graduated manner.

I would make sure you get a handle on usual sale prices for that model. If it's the one I think it is (also listed here) the price seems high, especially for one that's been written on.

    Re: Gibson F5G

From around 1999 to 2002, Flatiron Performers were essentially the same as F5-G's, and they can be found occasionally used for good prices.
